Publisher's Summary

Roger Scruton’s How to be a Conservative presents the case for modern conservatism not in the terms of an elegy but rather as a practical example of how to live as a conservative despite the pressures to live otherwise.

As he writes, the book ‘is not about what we have lost, but about what we have retained, and how to hold on to it’.

In this witty and frank account, Scruton draws on his years of experience as a counter-cultural presence in public life. He examines the truths in Nationalism, Socialism, Capitalism, Liberalism, Multiculturalism, Environmentalism, Internationalism and finally Conservatism.

The book concludes on a personal note, with 'a valediction forbidding mourning but admitting loss'.

"A persuasive and poignant little book." (Ferdinand Mount, The Oldie)

The lost art of explanation lives again

Regardless of political persuasion, listeners will enjoy Scruton taking time to carefully define the essence of traditional English conservatism at a time when many parties known as conservatives have moved outside the core commitments of the philosophy.
This is not a book about Trump, Thatcher or Reagan, it goes beyond personalities to reach into the defining principals of conservatism and attempts to explain their relevance and application in today's world.
Excellently written, informative, thought provoking and relevantly touching on today's hot issues.

A wonderful listening experience

Scruton’s logic is impeccable and he is remarkably balanced. An exposition worthy of Burke or Smith.
