They never came back to pack up their furniture. A new occupant, Anna, has just moved in. I paid her a visit to warn her about the building. I didn't expect us to become friends, but we did. And now that Marwick House is waking up, she's asked me to stay with her. I never intended to become involved with the building or its vengeful, dead inhabitant. But now I have to save Anna.

Sure, the building hasn't been inhabited in 40 years and vines strangle the age-stained walls, but Guy is convinced he can clean it up and sell it. He'd be crazy to turn down free money. Right? The house is hours from any other habitation, and Guy can't get phone reception in the old building. He decides to camp there while he does repairs. Surely nothing too bad can happen in the space of a week. But there's a reason no one lives in Rookward House, and the dilapidated rooms aren't as empty as they seem....

Publisher's Summary
Sophie's world is shattered when disaster bankrupts her family. She's still reeling from the news when she's offered an unexpected solution: Mr. Argenton, a wealthy stranger, asks for her hand in marriage.
Marrying Mr. Argenton will restore her family's fortunes and save them from scandal, but condemns Sophie to a life in Northwood, a vast and unnaturally dark mansion situated hours from civilization.
Sophie struggles to adjust to her new position as mistress over the desolate house. Mr. Argenton's relatives are cold, and Mr. Argenton himself is keeping secrets. Even worse, the house is more than it seems.
Mr. Argenton's young cousin, Elise, draws terrifying images. Doors slam. Inhuman figures slink through the forest surrounding the house. A piano plays in the middle of the night. Blood drips from the ceilings.
Sophie is inevitably pulled towards the terrifying truth: Northwood's ancient halls are haunted by the family's long-dead ancestors. The malevolent spirits - produced by grisly deaths - resent her intrusion into their home.
Trapped in Northwood and desperate for an escape, Sophie's fate is further complicated as she finds herself irrevocably drawn to the tall, dark-eyed man she married. She suspects her feelings are returned, but Mr. Argenton is hiding the truth about the house - and his secrets are so dangerous that they might just be unforgivable.

Good story, average narrator
The story was pretty good- I wouldn’t say it was amazing, but it kept me interested.
My issue was the narrator. For starters, she pronounced ‘Mathias’ differently several times in the same paragraph, which really irritated me. Just stick to one.
Secondly, her voice for the Grimlock was ridiculous. It sounded like someone pretending to be spooky but actually taking the Mickey. Her portrayal of the Grimlock literally took all the scare out of it and just made it ridiculous and laughable.

Too much romance for my taste.
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
People who enjoy a good romance would love this book. It has a lovely ending with a nod to the next series.... I love that.
I personally am not a romance novel person. The other two books I have read from this author did not have a romantic theme so I was surprised.
Also, the main character drove me nuts, simpering perhaps?
What didn’t you like about Caitlin Kelly’s performance?

Great Narrator,and good story, but,,,,
Call me a reader who likes stories to have their ends all tied up by that final page. So, I was disappointed in that very brief final chapter. Maybe this is just how the author writes all of her books? This was my first purchase from this author and I really enjoyed the suspense and the quality of the romantic interest in the characters. I think the imagination does far more for us, than vivid, in your face physical encounters. So, I did enjoy this book. But, I could have done without the epilogue! I wasn't happy with that chosen ending at all. I will probably try one more from this author, hoping it's not something that repeats itself in other storylines. I hope it doesn't. The narrator did a great job and I could see the progression of the main characters maturity throughout the story. I would like to hear her narrate more stories in the fiction genre.

creepy-good, but WTF heroine
Seriously Darcy, your strong, intelligent, brave heroine trusts the wrong people, stands up to the wrong people, and I question a lot of her decisions. She's annoyingly helpless, but it's been fun watching her almost bite it over and over again. I would recommend this book for creepy scary fun.

good, but implausible
well, it’s hard to say much about this book except that it’s pretty implausible. What’s this? A magic candle that goes out and lights itself again? That’s just one of its flaws. It’s kind of corny and predictable throughout but there’s plenty of action. The love scenes are a bit pathetic in my opinion mind but well, it passed a few hours at least.

Entertaining, if slight, gothic romance
This is an atmospheric, gothic novel. It is well read by the narrator. The story is a little slight, it’s not at all clear why our heroine falls in love with her arranged marriage husband and she shows a shocking lack of anger at the dark secrets his family reveal. Some of the plot reveals are a little too convenient. However, overall it’s enjoyable as a light read. I’m not sure it has enough substance to sustain a second book.
