About this listen

April 1803, and the Peace of Amiens is failing as Horatio Hornblower takes a three-master on a vital reconnaissance mission… On the day of his marriage to Maria, Hornblower is ordered to take the Hotspur and head for Brest – war is coming and Napoleon will not catch His Majesty’s navy with its britches round its ankles. With thoughts of his new life as a husband intruding on his duties, Hornblower must prove himself to be not only the most capable commander in the fleet, but also its most daring if he is to stop the French gaining the upper hand. This is the third of eleven books chronicling the adventures of C. S. Forester’s inimitable nautical hero, Horatio Hornblower.

A superlative reading of a well crafted book. Meticulous detail has gone into writing this book and the execution of it as an audio book was enjoyable in the extreme.

I found the description of the wedding and other irrelevant matters, redundant and tiresome.
The rest I found thoroughly entertaining and engaging. I am starting the next right now.

Enjoyable.

Forester’s character creation and narrative realism is second to none. His tales are exciting and inspiring adventures of great depth and maturity that make beautiful use of the historical setting. An author who was then contemplating his own mortality writing through the lens of a young naval officer experiencing grand challenges for the first time on his rise within the service.

A work of art by a genius that’s wonderfully narrated
