Publisher's Summary

Winner of the Women's Prize for Fiction 2009

Jack Boughton - prodigal son - has been gone 20 years. He returns home seeking refuge and to make peace with the past. A bad boy from childhood, an alcoholic who cannot hold down a job, Jack is perpetually at odds with his surroundings and with his traditionalist father, though he remains Boughton's most beloved child.

His sister, Glory, has also returned, fleeing her own mistakes, to care for their dying father. A moving book about families, about love and death and faith, Home is unforgettable. It is a masterpiece.

Just wonderful!!!

What do you call the Gilead series of four books? A quadrilogy? Whatever! All I know is that Home is the best of them all. I wept when I read it a few years ago, listening to this audiobook has been something I will never forget. So well read! Every voice just right. Nothing can prepare you for the experience of living with these people and sharing their griefs and joys.
You will love Glory, you will wish her father would learn a little sensitivity, and you’ll grieve for Jack. If only...

Home by Marilynne Robinson

This is one of my favourite books but this is the worst possible voice to recount a story of such delicacy and nuance. It is rhetorical in the extreme. I found it agony!

Almost great

Wonderfully written, gently developed but if only something a bit more substantial happened. It is one of a four- book series so perhaps it will be more satisfying when all are read. This is the second book and I think they could be read in any order. The narration is very slow and I had to speed it up by 40% to make it bearable.
