Publisher's Summary

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children was the surprise best seller of 2011 - an unprecedented mix of YA fantasy and vintage photography that enthralled audiences and critics alike. Publishers Weekly called it "an enjoyable, eccentric read, distinguished by well-developed characters, a believable Welsh setting, and some very creepy monsters."

This second novel begins in 1940, immediately after the first book ended. Having escaped Miss Peregrine's island by the skin of their teeth, Jacob and his new friends must journey to London, the peculiar capital of the world. Along the way, they encounter new allies, a menagerie of peculiar animals, and other surprises.

Complete with dozens of newly discovered (and thoroughly creepy) vintage photographs, this new adventure will delight fantasy fans of all ages.

Critic Reviews

"[Heyborne] moves masterfully among the large cast of characters, creating distinct British voices for each of Jacob's peculiar friends. Heyborne's sense of timing, evident pleasure in the material, and ability to thrillingly execute the book's many dramatic moments will keep listeners riveted." ( AudioFile)

Slow to get going but finishing on a cliffhanger.

I enjoyed this book more than the first. A much better narrator made this one a pleasure to listen too.
The storyline was a it slow to kick off but developed into something I didn't want to end.

even better than the first book

fantastic series, even better than the first book in both story and narrator. The performance from Kirby is really well done.

There are some powerful emotive scenes (especially in the wartime loops) and great character development.

Pleased again

I found it strange having a different narrator from the first book. But once I got adjusted to it the thought Kirby Heybourne did a fantastic job. Once again, great story!

So good! 1million x better than the first!

I can't believe how much richer, complex, fast moving and imaginative this story was compared to the first!
The only star I left off was performance as the narrator, while mostly doing a good job had the awful habit of yelling loudly to narrate a characters yelling. I think he must not have thought about the fact that people listen to audio books with headphones and to relax. There are ways to narrate yelling without actually raising his vocal volume to a startling level.
Incredible journey though. Loved every second and can't wait for the third!

Peculiar and Suspenseful

A very well written suspenseful adventure! I do recommend that you read Book #1 first otherwise you might be a bit lost because of all the unique references in Peculiardom.
Lost of twist and turns. Very unique and creative.

Different narrator

The first book had a very young sounding guy reading. This guy is a major change. It took me a while to get used to his voice but in the end it sounded right for the part.

Suspenseful & Frustrating

Our peculiar hero's are trapped emotionally and perceptively as children with decades of experience with the same day. I don't think you could create a more devilishly agonizing fatal flaw.

Well Written, Not as Engrossing as #1

The first book was fascinating, learning about all the oddities and abilities of the children stuck in a perpetual time loop.

In Hollow City, the kids embark on a mission to locate another to turn Mrs. Peregrine's back to human form. Along the way, they meet new peculiars, whites, hollows, and have difficulty navigating the different time periods and obstacles associated with each. While this book is extremely well written, I wasn't engrossed and would have skipped it. I'm a non-sci-fi fan, but will dabble if I like the characters and/or storyline. This one was too much sci with no further character discovery and development. Better skipped or skim the book. Kirby Heyborne is not my favorite male narrator.

So much better than the first!

Kirby Heyborne brought this book to life and gave it the dignity it deserves! After the dreadful narration of the first book I almost couldn't bear to listen to another go, but hoping it might be the narrator that was the problem and took a chance on the second. The difference was night and day. And, frankly, the book was much better written and, the characters better developed. Anyone that I was around while I listened to it fell into the story immediately and didn't want to stop listening. Just so enjoyable. Can't wait for the next.

A continuing story you have to read.

If you read the first book you should continue the journey with this book. I almost wished I had re-read the first book before I started this one so I could place everyone. This is a somewhat dark tale but since it is written about children or child like adults it seems more fun. Will there be a 3rd?

I love the how the reader really bring the characters to live through his voices! I read the first book of the series and knew I had to listen to the second one! This book is absolutely marvelous! The journey it takes you on is suspenseful and wonderful! I can not wait for the third book!

Narrated terribly!!

I love the book. I quickly downloaded this one before reading any reviews. Had I known that it was narrated so bad, I wouldn't have even bothered. It sounds like he's reading poetry. He can't even bother to pronounce the names correctly, or even read with the accents.

Endings.....

Good story and lovely characters, but this series always ends it's books in the middle of the story. it really seems like it's a large book chopped into 3 books. Leaves you with a .....WTF moment.

The first book was ruined by the awful attempt at accents. This one is leaps and bounds better and the story is pretty great too. I would recommend it!

Good story- interesting narration!

The story is worth a listen if you enjoyed the first book. The narration was good when he was American, but some dodgy English accents- and German Welsh?? I did also find myself correcting the pronunciation of Enoch on a regular basis!

I did enjoy despite or because if this!

Still love this series despite the narrator

This narrator is better than the first book but I still didn't love him, which is a shame as I adore these books and the magical world they take you to.

The character's are coming into their own more and their little quirks are becoming more obvious. There's more understanding on what's going on and the bigger picture in this book.

This is a great series for children and adults alike and I would imagine it will end up being a classic just a shame rubbish narrators were picked as it could have been so much more...

Such a relief after first book's narrator

A great continuation of this story. Very well written and well read too. The narrator of the first book was awful and the accents were painful, but this one was much better and his English and Scottish accents were passable and more than acceptable to my English ear. Bravo, onto the next.

Remaining hopeful for the third installment.

The different reader threw me over for a little bit at the beginning, check the sample carefully if you are sensitive to significant changes in pace, enunciation, etc.

I liked how the story picked up from the first novel and I found the fantasy elements just as original and entertaining as before. However, near the end the plot seemed to lose steam for me. I'm hoping the ending will make more sense once I delve into the next one.

good but not great.

the story was good nothing really special.
but it took s lot to get in to because of the pretty bad accents for the characters. Although 20x better than in the previous book.
