Story
When the doors of the lift crank open, the only thing Thomas remembers is his first name. But he's not alone. He's surrounded by boys who welcome him to the Glade - a walled encampment at the centre of a bizarre and terrible stone maze. Like Thomas, the Gladers don't know why or how they came to be there - or what's happened to the world outside. All they know is that every morning when the walls slide back, they will risk everything - even the Grievers, half-machine, half-animal horror that patrol its corridors, to try and find out.

Story
There used to be an empty chair at the back of my class, but now a new boy called Ahmet is sitting in it. He's nine years old (just like me), but he's very strange. He never talks and never smiles and doesn't like sweets - not even lemon sherbets, which are my favourite! But the truth is, Ahmet really isn't very strange at all. He's a refugee who's run away from a war. A real one. With bombs and fires and bullies that hurt people. And the more I find out about him, the more I want to be his friend.

"I write this sitting at the kitchen sink" is the first line of a novel about love, sibling rivalry, and a bohemian existence in a crumbling castle in the middle of nowhere. Cassandra Mortmin's journal records her fadingly glamorous stepmother, her beautiful, wistful older sister, and the man to whom they owe both their isolation and poverty: Father. The author of one experimental novel, and a minor cause celebre, he has since suffered from writer's block and is determined to drag his family down with him.

Better Than The Movie, Best Narrator on Audible.

Publisher's Summary
Stanley Yelnats' family has a history of bad luck, so when a miscarriage of justice sends him to Camp Green Lake Juvenile Detention Centre (which isn't green and doesn't have a lake), he is not surprised.
Every day he and the other inmates are told to dig a hole, five feet wide by five feet deep, reporting anything they find. The evil warden claims that it is character building, but this is a lie, and Stanley must dig up the truth.
Wonderfully inventive, compelling and hilarious, Louis Sachar has created a masterpiece.

Fabulous Feel-Good Literature
One of the best stories I've come across in a long time. Sachar makes you fall in love with his beautiful narrative which will stay with you for a long time. "Holes" is the epitome of what youth literature should be -- something to be loved by children of all ages. Like everything on Audible, the reading is superb. Often too little is made of this, but the outstanding quality of the productions and the skill of the actors doing the reading really stand to Audible's credit.

Holes is great, people are just mean
A very enjoyable, heartwarming and funny story that really does blow your mind on some occasions, the characters are well realised and prove to be compelling. I enjoyed the non-linear narrative and the interwoven plot lines which really prompted some thought provoking questions, the narrator's voice was also pleasant to listen to. My only problems are the loose ends at the end of the audiobook but I suppose that was intentional and how everything seems a bit too convenient to be realistic.

4/5
A fun and thoughtful book. Though clearly a children's book, at no point did I feel it was patronising or childish. The narrator did an amazing job and added to the experience.
The good:
- An interesting and enjoyable story that was encapsulated well.
- There was good character development and growth.
- The switches back to the past were well done and I enjoyed learning the tidbits that then later tied into the story.
- The narrative did an amazing job. I especially enjoyed the way they gave each character their own tone of voice so you knew who was speaking even without being told.
What could have been better:
- Some of the characters lacked depth beyond their immediate purpose to the story. The antagonists were only really that, not people with thought and backgrounds of their own.
Overall I had a really fun time listening to Holes and it was a nice palate cleanser after some heavier books.
