Publisher's Summary

The creator of the massively popular, award-winning podcast series The History of Rome brings to life the story of the tumultuous years that set the stage for the fall of the Roman Republic.

The Roman Republic was one of the most remarkable achievements in the history of civilization. After its founding in 509 BCE, the Romans refused to allow a single leader to seize control of the state and grab absolute power. The Roman commitment to cooperative government and peaceful transfers of power was unmatched in the history of the ancient world.

But by the year 133 BCE, the republican system was unable to cope with the vast empire Rome now ruled. Almost as soon as they had conquered the Mediterranean, Rome became engulfed in violent political conflicts and civil wars that would destroy the Republic less than a century later.

Chronicling the years 133-80 BCE, The Storm Before the Storm is a rollicking deep dive into the bloody battles, political machinations, and human drama that defined a dangerous new political environment - a stark warning for modern listeners about what happens to a civilization driven by increasing economic inequality, political polarization, and ruthless ambition.

    "History for everyone"

Mike got me hooked on Podcasts with his wonderful History of Rome. This book continues his enjoyable and accessible sharing of the lessons history provides for us. It addresses a period of Rome that fascinates me as it underpins the causes that allow for Augustus and the Roman Empire in a detail I had been looking for but hadn't previously found. Thanks Mike for a great book.

    "Relive the History of Rome"

A well written and fabulously presented audiobook. listening to the audiobook was like reuniting with an old friend as I loved Mike Duncan's epic podcast the History of Rome and equally loved revisiting the Roman Empire in The Storm Before the Storm audiobook.

I highly recommend anyone interested in Mike Duncans works or interested in the Roman Empire to listen to this wonderful audiobook.

Hopefully this is just the beginning of Mike Duncan publishing and narration as his podcast experience makes him easy to listen too and follow.

"Social and Political Turmoil brought to Life "

From the life of Tiberius Gracchus to the dictatorship of Sulla, Mike Duncan brings the struggles of Rome's ancient republic to life in spectacular narration.

I would highly recommend even to those who are not fans of history. Many lessons can be learned from the mistakes of the republic and they are still relevant to this day.

    "Intensly fascinating and well written"

Although more formal than his history podcasts, Mike Duncan delivers a fascinating and enlightening explanation of the events that solidified the beginning of the end for the Roman Republic. His background as podcaster shines through with humoristic style and a devotional sincerity to his writing.

Insightful, witty, and well-written. The narrative flows seamlessly and Duncan manages to weave in numerous characters, sub-plots and make the politics of agrarian land-reform as captivating as the wars.
If you're a fan of his History of Rome podcast, you'll find the same flair for narrative flow and dry humor in the book. Highly recommend.

    "7 minutes to 11 hours..."

Mike's come a long way since his first 7 minute podcasts, and it's been an informative, enjoyable journey with him as his confidence (and family grew).
People like this deserve to be supported and nurtured, which I have in my own little way via Mike's occasional fund drives.
Measured and informative, entertaining and enlightening, Mike has been hitting my history itch for around - 10 years? - now.

    Here's to 10 more...

    Well done Mike.

    "Absolutely Superb "

If you're thinking of buying this, then you probably don't need me to introduce the author. This is a superb piece of work from the foremost history podcaster, and maintains the very high standards of which we are used. The narrative flows well, the reading is as smooth as you would expect, and the subject is bought to life perfectly. Buy this audio book, you won't be disappointed

    "Mike Duncan does it again"

If you're already a fan of Mike Duncans 'History of Rome' podcasts, you already know how he manages to convey history clearly, concisesly and yet alway entertainly.
While the formula here in the book is the same, its very much of a case that 'it aint broke so dont fix it.' The result is an excellent audio book.

If you haven't come across his work, then be assured - this is late Roman Republic history presented in an accessible manner, always clear and interesting.
Not a text book by any means, but it does present the history in a way that is ideally suited to the audiobook format.

Very much recommended for anyone with an interest in history...and even those with just a passing curiousity should give it a go, as you wont find history presented better than this.
