These are some of the provocative questions Robert Darnton answers in this classic work of European history in what we like to call "The Age of Enlightenment".
In my humble opinion, this is basically a college lecture on how to research and interpret folk tales, and written/verbal materials produced or perpetuated over time by peasants or everyday people. If you're a historical scholar, you'll most likely love it.
