Publisher's Summary

Written by the author of the Maneuver Warfare Handbook and an active-duty USMC officer with experience in Iraq, 4th Generation Warfare Handbook is the doctrine for a new generation of war. Over the last 40 years, the world has gradually entered into a post-Clausewitzian state where the wars are undeclared, the battlefields can be anywhere, the uniforms are optional, and the combatants as well as the targets are often "civilian." Conventional militaries have repeatedly attempted to utilize technology to meet the new challenges posed, but even the most advanced technology has provided little more than meaningless short-term victories rendered futile in months, if not weeks.

This inability of Western governments and militaries to come to terms with the changing nature of modern warfare has led to failed interventions, failed occupations, and now even failed states everywhere from Eastern Europe to Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. And with the recent mass movement of peoples around the world, 4th Generation Warfare can be safely expected to appear in Western Europe and the United States before long.

Drawing on their decades of experience with military history and military action, the authors have distilled 4GW theory into a short, concise, easily accessible handbook that provides the soldier, the military analyst, and the civilian observer with a guide to understanding and responding to the changing realities of this challenging new form of war.

Although I do not agree with all of Lind's assessments and conclusions, I agree in principle on the changing face of warfare. This is a good read for any one interested in history or modern warfare.

"It's the Hearts and Minds Theory All Over Again"
    Any additional comments?

This was an enjoyable little read. Not terribly sophisticated. Modern War is becoming less a series of battles between national armies and more of a series of skirmishes between state run armies and smaller, less sophisticated groups like terrorist organizations or largely civilian staffed guerilla armies. Unless we invoke the tactics of "winning the hearts and minds" by respecting and enpowering the local populace and fighting the insurgents on their level -- utilizing light infantry units and guerilla tactics -- occupational state forces will end up fighting demoralizing wars without end (i.e. Vietnam, the Soviets in Afghanistan). Lots of great vignettes.

"great ideas we will never be allowed to institute"

the author submits some very good points and methods to address current short falls, but the risk adverse military we serve today will not allow this. additionally the general lack of discipline would make all but the most dedicated line infantryman request mast. this book describes what SOF already does, and what line infantry will never be able to become because of politics and safety concerns.

"Good Theories, But Only Theories from a non-combatant"

It is very clear from the start that Lind had no combat experience. Lind has some good ideas and bits of theory to share that maybe useful at times in very specific situations, however there are gaping holes that could prove very dangerous to units that attempt to adopt his views completely. While as a whole, it is good to keep the ideas of 4GW in mind and implement them as situations allow, it should never be acceptable to "take more casualties than your enemy" to win the hearts and minds of locals. I would challenge Lind to implement that strategy while his best friends are bleeding out next to him.

    "Military lingo"

Some of the language is specific to the military, and may be hard to understand for civilians. As a Marine officer this didn't bother me, but those with no military background should be aware of before purchasing. All in all a great read. I hope there will be follow on books discussing the Hama tactic and the perspective of applying these principles when you are defending your own society. Both of which seem more likely to occur under the Trump administration.

    "Excellent, although short."

Way to short unfortunately. Could have listened for hours on the subject, but a great quick in look into strategic and tactical considerations. The narrator is superb.

This book should be required reading for pretty much everyone.
I feel more aware of military ideology, tactics and thought then before.
An eye opening exploration of modern warfare tactics and their application.
