Publisher's Summary

If you want to discover the captivating history of England, then pay attention...

There are few places that entice the imagination quite like England. Just a little island off the western coast of continental Europe, it boasts a rich history that stretches all the way back to the first modern humans.

Since then, entire societies have risen and fallen as people learned to make flint and bone tools, bury their dead, and fortify their cities against foreign raiders.

From the fearsome Celtic warriors of prehistory to the clever inventors and statesmen of the modern era, England’s story is one bursting with magnificent castles, complex kings and queens, rebellious peasants, and horrifying plagues.

Throughout history, more people have called England home than perhaps most of us have ever realized.

A Great Book

Reading this history of England shows just how much of modern fantasy books pull from English history. Amazing to see just how violent the past really was.

Enjoyed It

I enjoyed the book. I love history and this period of English history is not an area I am familiar with. The author is relentless in disparaging the Catholics and I suppose some would be put off by that. A good audiobook.

Full Stars

Although history is very interesting, the text itself is the best part of this book: Hume could write about how to cook soup, still I'm sure he would make it worth reading. He definitely produced the best English texts I've ever read, this is a great example of his work and, although it is a history book, it reads as easily as the best romances do.

Enlightening

Brought many new things to light for me regarding the early English and where they really came from. Some times confusing due to the use of the same names for different people. I realize they did this to show lineage. I recommend it for people who like a long read of early English history.

Good For History Buffs

The subject matter is great but because of how long ago it was written, it was a struggle to enjoy as much as more contemporary material. Even still in small doses I appreciated the history and insights.

Very interesting and very informative

Very interesting and very informative. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this book. I wish I could go back and meet King Alfred. He truly helped give us the semi-civilized world of today.

The author does a good job

The author does a good job of introducing many characters from the pre-William the Conqueror era. Though many are not very noble, the one who stands out is Alfred the Great, who helped shape the country and its people.

Remarkably interesting.

I listen to this book thinking that I might find some insight into my British ancestors, having been told that my British roots stemmed from Canute's invasion of Britain. Yes, that was interesting, though not exactly on point for my ancestors. What earned this book five stars is the entertaining work. Making ancient history fun is a gift. This book is interesting, informative, and funny.

I enjoy this book

I enjoy the bits of humor the author put into the book. It could be a heavy story but is actually very entertaining as well as informative. It explains a lot about how and why we do so many things the way we do.

Exactly what I was looking for

Exactly what I was looking for - enough detail and anecdotes to be interesting without diving into weeds like many “serious” histories. The author’s wry sense of humor may not be to everyone’s liking but I found it refreshing.

well work

Well, one of the most interesting facts I learned is that Sir Francis Drake landed in California. This little tidbit of history wasn't taught in American schools when I was a student. Granted, that was a long time ago so this may have been discovered after I left school.

interesting book

This is an interesting and amusing summary of English history - both the language and the islands. Learned a lot about Vikings, Angles, Saxons, and King Alfred.
