Story
The house was stripped bare of all its treasures. Gone was the furniture, the family silver, the paintings and the antique china. And if that was a shock for Charles Todd, painter of horses, how much more harrowing was the trauma for his cousin Donald, whose house it was and whose young wife lay on the sitting room floor, bloody and dead... A coincidental meeting with a middle-aged widow sends Charles off to Australia, on the trail of a gang with a fruitful business in forging works of art.

Story
To a jockey, losing his license is the equivalent of being struck off, or disbarred, or cashiered. When steeplechase rider Kelly Hughes lost his license his first feelings were of bewilderment and disbelief, for he was not guilty of the charges. Nor, to the best of his knowledge, was the trainer he had ridden for, who lost his livelihood as well. When his first stunned state of shock subsided, Kelly began to wonder why he had been framed, who had done it, and how it had been achieved.

Outstanding entertainment
Fantastic storyline written by the master of the first person voice.
Hugely entertaining.
But for Britten's slight butchering of American accents (especially those of women), it would be 5 🌟 across the board.

Old Favourite
I have always loved this book and it was a joy to become reaquainted via audio book. Tony Briton is an excellent voice artist and manages the wide range of accents required admirably. The characters are very real and like all Francis characters from a wide range of backgrounds. Like most of his earlier works the action is set mainly in the racing world but most of the principal characters come from outside that world which makes it all the more interestin. I know lots of people that don't try Dick Francis because they are not interested in horses. Don't let that stop you. The book is about people, their strenths and weeknesses, their virtues and their flaws. The horses are part of the scenery and the plot but knowledge of and interest in horses is not required to enjoy this book. Of cours, if you like the horses than that's a bonus. Very compulsive listening and a good introduction to Dick Francis if you have not read him before.

very bad sound quality
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
This book although dated in a number of ways, was good, but due to the very poor sound quality left me feeling that I wish i hadn't bothered with it. there is tape hissing noises, fuzzy narrative and gaps
If you’ve listened to books by Dick Francis before, how does this one compare?
lf the sound quality wasn't so annoying i would have kept the book
What aspect of Tony Britton’s performance might you have changed?
Tony Britton's performance was spoiled by recording quality normally i find him a great narrator.
Did High Stakes inspire you to do anything?
Yes, return this version and look forward to buying a new recorded version
Any additional comments?
please Audible fix quality so i can buy this again

Good production
Good production of one of my favourite Dick Francis stories. I read the other reviews and was grateful to the reviewer who said that Bolinda had cleaned up the audio quality and I found it nice and clear without annoying hissing. Generally I liked Tony Britton's reading of the story, I didn't think much of his Welsh accent but otherwise it was all fine. The story is an intricate story of... I'm not sure it is revenge exactly... but an attempt to get justice without recourse to law.

Good sound & story but awful woman's voice
Happily the publishers have cleaned up this recording so as at April 2017 it's fairly flawless.
'High Stakes' is a pretty good story of a rich toymaker who's invested in horseflesh but has finally realised that his trainer has been fleecing him for years. The racing world turns against him when he sacks the trainer, and he finds it difficult to fight back against the ensuing slander and subsequent crooked dealings. The storyline is fairly gripping with interesting characters, although the final twists and turns are a bit predictable.
What spoils this reading is Tony Britton's utter inability to do women's voices - they're always delivered in an alarming falsetto which breaks the concentration. Luckily in this story there's only one woman (the love interest), who's absent for much of the time, so if you can grind your teeth and put up with it then this recording is bearable. It would be better, though, if the publisher could find a much younger voice actor to re-record the Francis canon - and one who can do women's voices too!
