About this listen

This program is read by the authors and features bonus interviews and rough recordings of Tegan and Sara's first songs, recorded on cassette tapes in the late '90s, and rediscovered 20 years later while writing High School.

From iconic musicians Tegan and Sara comes a nostalgic memoir about high school, detailing their first loves and first songs in a compelling look back at their origin story.

High School is the revelatory and unique coming-of-age story of Sara and Tegan Quin, identical twins from Calgary, Alberta, growing up in the height of grunge and rave culture in the '90s, well before they became the celebrated musicians and global LGBTQ icons we know today.

While grappling with their identity and sexuality, often alone, they also faced academic meltdown, their parents' divorce and the looming pressure of what might come after high school. Written in alternating chapters from both Tegan's point of view and Sara's, the book is a raw account of the drugs, alcohol, love, music and friendship they explored in their formative years.

A transcendent story of first loves and first songs, it captures the tangle of discordant and parallel memories of two sisters who grew up in distinct ways even as they lived just down the hall from one another. This is the origin story of Tegan and Sara.

Well I just finished and could happily rewind the cassette and start again! If it was on cassette of course.

I’m not a hard core fan, but I love their hits and would happily see a live set if everything lined up. I bought the book, but I love audiobooks read by the author(s), and this one is so good. No wonder they’ve just made a TV series too.

The book has such massive highs and lows and I felt all of it. I had nothing like that going on in high school myself but I felt like I was there, part of it. I felt so much parental pride as they discovered their music. My child is the same age and a musician, so I felt that connection.

I cried hearing many of the songs that punctuate lots of the chapters. I can’t recall any book that has brought out so much emotion for me.

Hearing those early song, so raw and honest, there is no way anyone could doubt they would have a successful career.

Hopefully you enjoy it as much as I have.

Wow. I laughed. I cried. Amazing.

When my sister (your biggest fan) told me the latest album was out and to go with it was a book of their coming of age and the beginning of the dynamic duo.

Even though I’m a man in my early 30’s I was taken onboard from beginning to end for all your trials and tribulations like they were my own, I cried in your slums, laughed and cheered you on in your victories.

Well done to the both of you, I’m looking forward to all the vocal performances from one of my favourite duos for the rest of my life.

Totally awesome and universally relatable

This book was incredibly enjoyable. I loved every single minute of it and was hooked from the start. A true story of teenage rebellion, music, relationships, heartbreak, and sexuality. Features original recordings from Tegan and Sara’s earliest work that had me near tears. I can’t recommend it enough! Instantly my favourite band memoir. Please, please, please write another!

Incredible!
