Publisher's Summary

No one knows who did it, least of all the police. Somewhere, in this tight-knit Irish Catholic community, someone must know something. Fourteen-year-old Kitty Doherty, pregnant with the dead man's child, is a danger to everyone who needs to keep the secret. Her mother, Maura, and best friend Nellie's grandmother decide the girls must be spirited away to Ireland to await the birth of the baby. But it isn't easy to keep a secret that big.

exceptional saga!

This book and its prequel, The Four Streets, is a first class novel about second class Irish immigrants relocated to Liverpool. The lives of the families on the four streets is both heartbreaking and hilarious. The narration suits this story beautifully, accents are flawless, inflection perfect. I cannot rate this trilogy high enough!

Absolutely brilliant

Well, I certainly ran the gamut of emotions reading this brilliantly written book. The story is, from start to finish wonderfully realistic, and the clever narration by Emma Gregory changing accents from Irish to Liverpudlian then back again, along with Welsh and the occasional Southern English had me actually “living” the story and found myself practicing my Irish accent....
I just could not stop listening to it and before I knew it I was getting to the end of the final chapter with panic, wishing it could just go on and on.
I actually purchased the next book THE BALLYMARA ROAD within minutes of finishing this one.
A must. I can not compare it to any other book I have read because I felt it has an absolute uniqueness.
