Publisher's Summary

Alexander Lawson is a former detective for Northern Ireland's police force. After a disastrous six-month stint in the drug squad, he became addicted to heroin and resigned in disgrace. Now 24, sickly, and on the dole, Alex learns that his high-school love, Victoria Patawasti, has been murdered in America. Victoria's wealthy family sends Alex to Colorado to investigate the case, and he seizes the opportunity for a chance at redemption.

But things don't go as planned. Plagued by a heroin habit, forced to go on the run after the only credible witness to Victoria's murder is accidentally killed, wanted by both the Colorado cops and the Ulster police, Alex struggles just to stay alive.

Gritty, with spot-on dialogue and black humor, Hidden River is a dynamic thriller.

Overall

I enjoyed the other books by this author, however this storyline became unbelievable in the extreme. If not for the skill of the narrator I would have closed the book earlier rather than just skipping sections of chapters. For me a disappointing selection.

Loved it!

Wonderful twists and turns, not usual stereotypical plot. Great flawed main character and …the totally brilliant narrator Gerard Doyle!

Got a bit of a thing for smack eh old boy?

Was a decent story but a lot of overly florid descriptions that go on for 3 times as long as necessary. Overall quite good. But also very much a love letter to smack, which gets very boring.

A Wide ranging story ….

A little different to the usual stories written by Adrian McKinty, with the occasional name, issue or situation arising, in common with his other books.
But, this book demonstrates wider reading and research on the part of the author.
An enjoyable story, thanks Mr McKinty!

Wonderful in it’s entirety

Wasn’t sure what to expect initially - but totally exceeded my expectations - twists and turns - unexpected events - great narration - very human and believable characters. Highly recommend this book.

Rambling, boring with no plot

What a load of nonsense. I like other books from this author but this is awful. Main character is useless druggie and there is too much rambling. No actual detecting going on. Not sure if I will be able to finish this book. Waste of time.

Enjoyed

I love the Author and look forward to more of his books - I have listened to quite a few already. He is knowledgeable with facts surrounding his stories.

Ok

I have loved all of Adrian McKintys books but this one has been my least favourite. Drug use is a constant theme in all his books but in this one it feels self indulgent and perhaps even a little autobiographical. A LOT of time is spent with the main character shooting up, and far less resolving the murder. It’s all a bit boring. Thank goodness for the wonderful narration, which is consistently excellent. I’m hoping the next two books of his that I have in my library are better.

Captivating in stages

A unique read of sometimes bizarre plot twists, a rather meandering ending but an always thorough look at the doings of an extremely flawed and weak individual. It’s certainly an original human caricature that leaves one desperate to hear the next passages at some stages but can leave the reader wondering what the writer is on about at other times. This is certainly well worth a listen for its originality alone.
