Story
Intelligence is usually seen as the ability to think and learn, but in a rapidly changing world, there's another set of cognitive skills that might matter more: the ability to rethink and unlearn. In recent months, the pandemic has forced us all to reevaluate our assumptions about health and safety and multiple acts of police brutality have challenged most of us to reconsider our responsibility for fighting racism. Yet in our daily lives, too many of us still favor the comfort of conviction over the discomfort of doubt.

Story
The motivations behind today's most successful leaders and entrepreneurs come to a simple yet decisive explanation: there are people who give, people who take, people who match and people who fake. Our world is filled with these givers, takers, matchers and fakers. Amazingly, those who succeed (not only personally but for their clients and companies) don't take or match. They give. (Although they're not necessarily philanthropic.)

The world's greatest bodybuilder. The world's highest paid movie star. The leader of the world's sixth largest economy. That these are the same person sounds like the setup to a joke. But this is no joke. This is Arnold Schwarzenegger. And this did not happen by accident. Arnold's stratospheric success happened as part of a process. As the result of clear vision, big thinking, hard work, direct communication, resilient problem-solving, open-minded curiosity, and a commitment to giving back. All of it guided by the one lesson Arnold's father hammered into him above all: be useful.

Story
When planning for the future we often ask, “What will the economy be doing this time next year?” Or, “What will be different ten years from now?” But forecasting is hard. The important events that will shape the future are inherently unpredictable. Instead, we should be asking a different question: What will be the same ten years from now? What will be the same one hundred years from now? Knowledge of the things that never change is more useful, and more important, than an uncertain prediction of an unknowable future.

The world's leading expert on psychological safety, her research has shown that the most successful environments are those in which we can fail effectively - without our mistakes being held against us. Now, Edmondson offers a revolutionary framework to get these failures right. She outlines the three archetypes of failure - simple, complex, and intelligent - before revealing how to minimise the consequences of the bad failures and maximise the potential of the good.

But in the real world people don’t make financial decisions on a spreadsheet. They make them at the dinner table, or in a meeting room, where personal history, your own unique view of the world, ego, pride, marketing, and odd incentives are scrambled together. In The Psychology of Money, award-winning author Morgan Housel shares 19 short stories exploring the strange ways people think about money.

Humans are unique in our ability to understand time, able to comprehend the past and future like no other species. It wasn't always so.

Publisher's Summary
Brought to you by Penguin.
We live in a world that's obsessed with talent. We celebrate gifted students in school, natural athletes in sports, and child prodigies in music. But admiring people who start out with innate advantages leads us to overlook the distance we ourselves can travel. We underestimate the range of skills that we can learn and how good we can become. We can all improve at improving. And when opportunity doesn't knock, there are ways to build a door.
Hidden Potential offers a new framework for raising aspirations and exceeding expectations. Adam Grant weaves together groundbreaking evidence, surprising insights, and vivid storytelling that takes us from the classroom to the boardroom, the playground to the Olympics, and underground to outer space. He shows that progress depends less on how hard you work than how well you learn. Growth is not about the genius you possess-it's about the character you develop. Grant explores how to build the character skills and motivational structures to realize our own potential, and how to design systems that create opportunities for those who have been underrated and overlooked.
Many writers have chronicled the habits of superstars who accomplish great things. This book reveals how anyone can rise to achieve greater things. The true measure of your potential is not the height of the peak you've reached, but how far you've climbed to get there.

Leave out the drums FFS
There were some helpful tips in this book but the stories rambled, and the constant drumming in Chapter 4 was more than enough to make me stop listening. We don't need to hear constant drumming for a story about learning.
If you are neurodivergent, expect awful noise sensitivity from unecessary noise in this book. Unfortunately it over-shadowed the lessons.

Tapping in to what others see (or don't)
An interesting exploration on identifying the hidden potential in yourself and others. Using an easily relatable narrative style and examples this book helps you consider how to see beyond what has already been achieved and look at the potential trajectory of a person's life. Well worth listening to if you ever doubt yourself or want to get the best out of those you lead.

Excellent!
Interesting and inspiring, message shared through stories of notable people, full of practical advice. Warmly recommend to everyone, regardless of developmental or life stage.
Loved the concepts - personality vs character, distraction as developmental scaffolding, asking for advice rather than feedback, burn out vs. bore out, recruiting for potential and much more…
