Story
Can Jane Tennison uncover a serial killer? The fourth in the Sunday Times best-selling Jane Tennison thrillers, Murder Mile is set in 1979 at the height of the 'Winter of Discontent' when economic chaos has led to widespread strikes across Britain. Jane Tennison, now a Detective Sergeant, has been posted to Peckham CID, one of London's toughest areas. As the rubbish on the streets begins to pile up, so does the murder count: two bodies in as many days. There are no suspects, and the manner of death is different in each case.

Story
Things can't get much worse for Detective Jane Tennison. Unceremoniously kicked off the adrenaline-fuelled Flying Squad, she now plies her trade in Gerald Road, a small and sleepy police station in the heart of London's affluent Knightsbridge. With only petty crime to sink her teeth into, Tennison can feel her career slowly flatlining. That is until the discovery of the most brutal murder Jane has ever seen: Charlie Foxley has been found viciously beaten to death with a cricket bat - his body dismembered and disembowelled.

Publisher's Summary
From the BAFTA award-winning creator of Prime Suspect, starring Helen Mirren, comes the blistering follow-up to the best-selling Tennison.
Jane Tennison, a young, inexperienced WPC, learns the hard way never to take anyone - or anything - at face value, whether in her dealings with her police colleagues or when confronted by seemingly innocent suspects.
Hidden Killers sees Jane acting as a decoy prostitute, with the hope of capturing a suspect wanted for numerous sexual assaults. The attacker is drawn in and put under arrest. Commended for bravery in the case, Jane is given CID status and moves from Hackney to Bow Street Station as detective. Her first call-out is to a nonsuspicious death. The victim is a young mother drowned tragically in her bath, leaving a bereft and doting husband and a young child.
The two storylines interweave as Jane begins to doubt the evidence against her assailant in East London and becomes certain that the young woman in the bath did not drown in tragic circumstances. Two entirely different cases but one common thread - the lingering doubt in Jane's mind around the evidence...and around her colleagues.

enjoyed it
I enjoyed this book more than the first one; it was a bit more going on in this one, but not an "action" story of course. A bit less descriptions than in the "Tennison", a bit more twists and turns. Easy to listen and to follow. narration is very good.

Gripped tight and didnt let go
I read book one in this early Jane Tennison series and loved it and was looking forward to book 2.
It didn't disappoint. Jane is ahead of the rest even at the start of her career. She sees links and opportunities to solve clues and move the case along and takes them despite going against the authority within the Police.
I felt the story was well told and developed. It felt real and I really got engrossed in it.
I loved the plot from the start with the reader following the clues with Tennison and seeing the conclusions reached.
Its interesting to see where the highly accomplished detective Tennison from Prime Suspect came from.
There were two stories running here and I felt both of them were given enough attention to feel gripping.
It was interesting to see how the role of women in work was at that time and the difficulties it meant for women who were just trying to do their work while having to bat away prejudice at the same time
I found the narrative ok not great but not dire and did not (for me) distract from the story.
I would highly recommend this one and hope book three will come soon.

Perfect narration of a good story
Hidden Killers covers two crimes that involve the young JT. While she shows herself to be a natural detective, it's also obvious that she's the kind of character who is going to wind up her team members no end. We also see the way she unknowingly beguiles all her male colleagues - something that will greatly affect her career down the line. I also found myself wanting to shout 'no' at the recording, every time she picks up a glass of white wine. We know where that leads...
I love Julie Teal's narration of Tennision. Apart from a slightly dodgy accent now and then, she is spot on, and even has a slight touch of 'Helen Mirren' about her. I'm very sorry to see that she doesn't narrate the next book.

Gripping, well-constructed detective novel
I believe that this novel, Hidden Killers, and the one called Tennsion, both of which cover Jane’s time as a young PC, were written after the Prime Suspect books were first published and the success of the TV series starring Helen Mirren. The young Jane is depicted as less feisty than when more senior and inured to her male colleagues attitudes to female police officers, but her ambition and tenacity are evident from the beginning of her career.
As the book is set in the 1970s it is interesting to be reminded how difficult it was to pin down whether a suspect had been at a crime scene in the days before DNA analysis became a vital tool for detectives.
Unlike some other reviewers, I thought the reader to be very good and, by using different accents and tones of voice, she helped me keep track of the different players. The characters are well drawn and the two main crimes clearly delineated so I didn’t get confused as the stories switched back and forth.
A gripping and satisfying listen with believable characters.
