Jahrhunderts, konnte jede Frau - einmal der Hexerei angeklagt - auf dem Scheiterhaufen brennen. Wie viele diesen qualvollen Tod erleiden mussten, vermag heute niemand mehr zu sagen. Die Schätzungen belaufen sich auf eine bis acht Millionen Opfer.
Wie eine Epidemie griff der Hexenwahn in Mitteleuropa um sich. Niemand blieb verschont: Kinder, Hebammen, schöne Frauen in der Blüte ihres Lebens, ehrwürdige Greisinnen aber auch Männer waren die unschuldigen Opfer einer gnadenlosen Tötungs-Maschinerie, die überall in Europa Angst und Schrecken verbreitete. Erst mutige Aufklärer setzten Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts dem Spuk ein Ende.
