Met een tegengif kan hij terugkeren naar zijn goede ik, maar dit tegengif wordt steeds minder effectief. Hierdoor kan hij zijn kwade evenbeeld steeds minder in toom houden, met alle gevolgen van dien. De Schotse schrijver Robert Louis Stevenson (1850-1894) werd vooral bekend met zijn piratenroman Schateiland uit 1883, maar hij schreef vele romans, reisverhalen, gedichten en toneelstukken. Zijn werk werd veelvuldig verfilmd.
