Am Vorabend des Zweiten Weltkriegs: Der Berliner Fabrikant Hermann Kypscholl wähnt sich auf der Seite der Gewinner, seiner Familie fehlt es an nichts und bei Feiern mit illustren Gästen in der Wannsee-Villa fließt Sekt in Strömen. Tochter Anna steht vor einer Karriere als Rassenforscherin; Sohn Otto, der eigentlich Maler werden will, wird von seinem Vater in die Wehrmacht gezwungen und raubt in Europa Kunstwerke für Nazigrößen. Doch nach 1945 ist nichts mehr, wie es war: Anna wird vermisst, Otto sitzt im Kriegsverbrechergefängnis und die Teilung Deutschlands schlägt eine Schneise in die Familie. Erst in den 1960er Jahren finden Annas und Ottos Kinder zusammen, aber beide leiden unter den Wunden, die der Krieg gerissen hat.
