Publisher's Summary

In an effort to rejuvenate his flagging career, crime novelist Ethelred Tressider decides to set his new book in Egypt and embarks on a 'research trip' with his literary agent, Elsie Thirkettle, in tow. No sooner has their cruise on the Nile begun, however, than an attempt is made on Ethelred's life.

When the boat's engine explodes and a passenger is found bloodily murdered, suspicion falls on everyone aboard - including a third-rate private eye, two individuals who may or may not be undercover police, and Ethelred himself.

As the boat drifts out of control, though, it seems that events are being controlled by a party far more radical than anyone could have guessed.

Herring on the Nile is an ingenious mystery, and a darkly funny tribute to Agatha Christie and the golden age of crime fiction.

Too much style lacking substance

I think the author was trying hard to be witty, and the result was conflated and unnecessary dialogue, confusion about whether this is a comedy or a serious attempt at writing a murder mystery, was in Tiley predictable, and I think at times the plot lost its wayThe result was confusion, I was confused about what type of book applause and even though I'm not averse to comedy in anything, it wasn't great comedy and it wasn't great crime fiction.I suppose the title says it all, the whole story is really The red herring.at the end we don't even get a proper motives for The murder.

Needs two voices

Listening to this book was difficult The scene changed. The story narrative character changed. It was hard to follow. A two gender narration would have made a positive impact

Good story, ruined by poor narration.

Would you try another book written by L. C. Tyler or narrated by Gordon Griffin?

Not if narrated by Gordon Griffin.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Herring on the Nile?

Enjoyed the relationship between the two main character, very amusing.

How could the performance have been better?

I was so excited to see another book by L C Tyler, this is the second LC Tyler audio book l have purchased.
The first one was brilliantly narrated by Anne Cater who was able to assume the voices of all the characters and brought a very amusing tale to life. The character of Elsie was particularly good. In this recording it was very difficult to identify who was speaking, the differences were so slight, especially between the make and female characters.

I will not be purchasing the third book with this narrator.

Do you think Herring on the Nile needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

Yes but with Anne Cater. It would be worth re recording this one. It would still be enjoyable even though one know the plot.

Bibliophile's Delight!

So much fun for lovers of crime's golden age in a deconstructed Death on the Nile (with a touch of Orient Express). Poor old Ethelred's planned love trip turn's first to work, than goes all James Bond. I love the turn taking narratives of writer and agent , discussions on writing and skewering of the less salubrious aspects of the writing life. A good antidote to the dark psychological abyss of some of today's more relentless thrillers. Solid narration.

Very enjoyable

Really enjoy the Herring books. This is the first I've listened to, but have read several other books. Will be very to listen to other audible books about Ethelred and Elsie.
