About this listen
'Heresy is a brilliant book' - The Times
'Enthralling' - The Sunday Telegraph
‘In the beginning was the Word,’ says the Gospel of John. This sentence – and the words of all four gospels – is central to the teachings of the Christian church and has shaped Western art, literature and language, and the Western mind.
Yet in the years after the death of Christ there was not merely one word, nor any consensus as to who Jesus was or why he had mattered. There were many different Jesuses, among them the aggressive Jesus who scorned his parents and crippled those who opposed him, the Jesus who sold his twin into slavery and the Jesus who had someone crucified in his stead.
Moreover, in the early years of the first millennium there were many other saviours, many sons of gods who healed the sick and cured the lame. But as Christianity spread, they were pronounced unacceptable – even heretical – and they faded from view.
Now, in Heresy, Catherine Nixey tells their extraordinary story, one of contingency, chance and plurality. It is a story about what might have been.
Critic Reviews
And like all totalitarianism it just repeats & and repeats.
The "Jesus" message has been fine tuned over the centuries, to the point where now we have a slick well oiled propaganda machine, in the early days they just had to kill you if you didn't play the game.
Same game still today, just a little more subtle.
A must read for all people who practise any religion, best for Catholics of course.
But I doubt any of those groups would ever read this, rather they would chose to burn it probably.
Terrific history.

“Heresy” is a wonderful sequel to her earlier book “The Darkening Age”, which reminds us what the world lost when Christianity conquered its non-Christian contemporaries.
I can’t wait for Catherine’s next offering, as she seems to be riveting on pretty much any topic.
I also want to commend the narrator, who is one of the best narrators that I have heard (and I have listened to hundreds of them over the years)! The narrator captured every nuance of the author beautifully, which makes the reading journey twice as enjoyable!
My heartfelt thanks are offered to you both!
In addition to purchasing a Kindle version, I will soon be purchasing some hardcover versions for my physical library and a friend.
Yes, it’s that good!! Get yourself a copy and enjoy!
An eloquent voice in the wilderness! Marvellous!
