And so it goes
One thing I appreciated in this book is how deeply and debilitating grief and guilt can be. Mass is not afraid to show her protagonist as flawed and struggling in the pit of her despair. This makes her return to form all the more exhilarating and satisfying.
Here we get introduced to some great new characters and settings, who fit in well to the narrative. Even if some of them are a little predictable, each have an interesting twist to their characterization.
Again, it's clear Maas has planned a long game for this series, and it's good to see some of those threads come into play

Scene setting
I did listen to the whole book which is very easy when you have an hours drive morning and night.I got a little fed up with the setting the scene for it to all come together in the last few chapters. i believe this is very much a series written for teenagers and I think they would enjoy and relate to the language and sarcasm used constantly.
Yes I will listen to them all.

Fire, Ice and Wind..
Heir of Fire is undoubtedly the best book in this series so far. It is wonderfully long and I was hoping it was longer, it kept me occupied from the beginning to the end, making me want more and more. So many new characters are introduced and new sides to our beloved characters are shown. I really enjoyed this book and I think it is the most enjoyable one so far. The character development and growth is phenomenal and the new connections and characters and great addition and can’t wait to see how these books continue to go.
After being ordered to sail to Wendlyn on a mission to retrieve Wendlyn’s naval defense plans and assassinate its King and Prince at their annual midsummer ball, by the King of Adarlan. Celaena finds herself on a roof having to steal and fight each day after having no funds or coin left over. But after running into a Fae Warrior, that is there to collect her to take her to meet Maeve the Queen of the Fae. But once again nothing ever goes easy and everything has a price so finding answers about the Wyrdkeys won’t come easy. But having a little fun with the Fae Prince Rowan in the process may just make her time in Mistward while trying to prove herself worth it. Training and scullery duty isn’t all that Celaena is going to have to deal with while staying in Mistward, while discovering herself and her abilities a darkness is lurking around that is closing in and won’t stay away for long.
In this book you will see Celaena broken more than she has ever been, and she is relentlessly blaming herself for the deaths of her beloved ones. She has given up and has no fight left in her, after leaving Dorian and Chaol behind she has no one and she isn’t sure she will have anyone if she returns back to Ardalan. She is spiralling into herself and she has no anchor. But Rowan, oh Rowan may just be what she needs to help pull her out if the darkness that’s trying to swallow her. We witness how she becomes Celaena Sardothien, how her life changed forever on that horrific night ten years ago. But by facing all that sorrow, she is able slowly heal and start to become the Queen that Terrasen needs, one more powerful and deadlier that you could ever imagine.
I LOVE Rowan Whitethorn, when he and Celaena first meet up he is so stubborn, broody and secretive. But when he opens up, oh wow, a girl can use an extinguisher especially when he smiles and Laughs. *swoon He is an alpha-Fae-male in all his glory, with the moves and wind and ice power. He's scary, intense, protective, caring, but also lethal. Rowan is finally the first person that is not going to put up with Celaena’s crap, and that is just what she needs.
The two of them develop a friendship and something so soul deep and important, no not romantic, that will fill your heart, as Celaena finally has someone she can trust truly, completely. No secrets, no barriers, no judgement between them, they would die for each other, kill for each other, fight for each other. But most importantly are there for each other no matter what.
“Gods, he was brilliant. Cunning and wicked and brilliant.
Even when he beat the hell out of her. Every. Damn. Day.”
“I claim you, Rowan Whitethorn. I don't care what you say and how much you protest. I claim you as my friend.”
Dorian Havilliard oh swoon-worthy, humble Prince. He has grown since the beginning of the series and in this book, he has grown more and is on the path to become the King we know he will become. Since Celaena being sent to Wendlyn, Dorian has had to deal with having powers but having no one to talk to, but to make things worse his best friend Chaol is acting like his magic doesn’t exist. Or that what happened in the dungeons was real. Having no Chaol or Celaena to talk to, Dorian starts a connection with the healer Sorscha, then things start to become more, he is moving on from Celaena. I didn’t really like who he was moving on with, as he does deserve happiness, especially after being abandoned by Chaol. Regardless Dorian will win your heart because he stands up to his father.
Chaol Westfall, you selfish, self-centred a**hole, you really did my head in in this book. I thought you were a great guy, you were dedicated, loyal, selfless but this book showed a new side to you and I do not like it. At the end of Crown of Midnight, his friendship with Dorian is left in shambles and things don't get any better in this book, they grow further apart. The Captain does only have the Prince's safety and freedom in mind, but keeping secrets, lies, not being able to accept Celaena's and Dorian's powers just makes Chaol a very ugly character.
Aedion Ashryver the Northern Wolf, Celaena's cousin and childhood best friend. He's all smiles, muscles, wild, clever and set on taking down the King of Adarlan. He seems like he is under the spell of the Valg rings and the Kings puppet, but so things become clear and you fall for his charm. When he finds out Aelin is alive, he makes a pack to do whatever it takes to see his true queen back in Terrasen. He's loyalty and determination to Aelin has him in a terrible place at the end of the book and I really hope that things work out for him in the next one.
Manon Blackbeak, the new Antihero you are going to love, she is the Heir to the Blackbeak coven of Ironteeth Witches and Leader of the Thirteen. She is bloodthirsty, wicked an loyal. The Witches are part of the dark plans that the King of Adarlan and Perrington have, they are to be the riders of the Wyverns that have been created in Morath so they can be lead into battle. The Witches are not supposed to have hearts, they are supposed to have Obedience, discipline, and brutality, these are the only three things the Blackbeak Witches are to live by. By when a Witch from a Yellowleg coven knocks Manon into a Wyvern pit she meets Abraxos a bait, scared and weak Wyvern and a instant bond is made. Manon’s interactions with Abraxos had me cracking up and I was so glad that she had him as he Wyvern as the 2 of them together are a perfect match of hard and soft together. As the story goes along Manon starts to see things more clearly and that maybe her Grandmother's rules might not be the best to follow.

Shocked
I first started listening to this series because i found it was suggested on a "books similar to Harry Potter" search I did. I'll be honest, I wasn't expecting much.
The first book was good. It seemed a little cliche at first, and it felt like the narrator hadn't quite mastered her craft. And yet, I downloaded the second book immediately after I finished the first. The second was better. There were some palpable plot twists, more complex characters, and the boom wasn't afraid to get a little darker, which I loved.
But then, bam, this third novel hits you like a freight train. Intense, emotionally and psychologically gripping writing. And the narrator has really come into her own. She's like a different person!
Honestly, never thought I'd be recommending this series so strongly, but you should read it. I'm downloading the 4th one right now :)

Amazing Story, Just What the Series Needed
If you have read the other books... This is the book you have been waiting for. Not only was it a great story in itself, but it also provides a lot of the back story about Celaena, including flashbacks from her childhood as princess and early use of magic. The book is full of Fay, Demi-Fay, monsters, LOTS of magic, battles, betrayals, and on, and on.
If you haven't already read the rest of the series, then you probably won't get nearly as much from this book as you would have if you started from the beginning. Even if you haven't though, you will certainly still appreciate it.
Celaena spends the entire book in Wendlyn, where she was sent at the end of the last book. She goes through a great deal of self discovery and understanding while learning how to use (and more importantly control) her magic under the direction of a bitter yet likeable warrior Fay. Although she fears the power she hasn't been able to access since childhood, she none-the-less rediscovers how powerful and unique her gifts are, and how valuable and necessary they will be in defeating the King.
Chaol and Dorian tell the story from back in Rifthold where both of them, despite being at odds, plot against the King in their own efforts. One of the new characters, a cousin to Celaena and general to the king, joins the two of them in an attempt to destroy the King's ability to suppress magic.
A new character also gives a perspective of the kings plans from elsewhere on the continent, in a very interesting independent story line. Even though this character is completely isolated from the others, I have a feeling she will become a major player in the next book.
Another thing I liked about the book was that is wasn't just told primarily from Celaena's point of view (as in the last two books), but all the characters get an equal share of the story. In many other book series, I find this annoying because I really only care about what is happening with the main character, but the other story lines are interesting enough that I was just as happy to hear from them.
Although this book is (unfortunately) just as much of a cliffhanger as the last was, it at least left off in a good place. I also finished feeling satisfied given all that that happened, all the new developments, and all of the new material.
With as great a story as this was, and another excellent performance by the narrator, this is without a doubt worth the credit I spent...

Exactly Where the Series Needs to Go
Okay, so I am going to be 100% honest. I wasn't a huge fan of this series. I enjoyed the first book, but I felt like Maas focused too much on a possible love triangle than on this incrediblely awesome world she has created! It was also extremely frustrating that the characters didn't know what was going on like what "wyrds" were, and it seemed like we were never going to learn. Then the end of the second book happened...
I am absolutely thrilled with where this series is going. We are FINALLY getting some answers! I'm crazy about the world-building that is going on, and, yes, everything is starting to click together. I almost feel like re-listening to the first two now, so I can understand the hints at what is happening.
So, if you know me, you know what sets books apart from being "good" to "amazing" is character development. And, boy oh boy, did I get some character development. Let's break down by characters since it's a mixed POV:
1. Celaena
Poor Celaena. I will admit I really didn't care for her at first! I didn't find her arrogance charming. She seemed one-dimensional to me...Until now. She has so. much. depth. I loved learning about her past and why she is the way she is. I was a little weary that we, the listeners, were going to be bogged down by her despair (like in Mockingjay), but we weren't. Her fears are tangible, and it was thrilling to watch her become the woman she was born to be.
The training scenes were beautiful. The development of her magic was beautiful. Her friendship with Ronan was beautiful.
2. Ronan
I am always hesitant about the introduction of new males. Celanea was just coming out of a terrible break-up, and I truly did not want to have another book focusing on Celaena developing a new boyfriend. Ronan was not that. They had a wonderful friendship, where, if it developed into a romance, I would be completely fine. Ronan was broken, just as Celaena was. They healed each other. I'm still not over how beautiful there last couple scenes with Ronan were. My only complaint is that he probably won't be too prominent in the next book.
3. Manon
We are introduced to another new character...which, again, scary. But, Manon's POV ended up being my second favorite to listen to! She is a witch, but in a different clan than the only witch we have been introduced to - Baba Yellowlegs. She is a cruel creature that revels in violence. I've never read anything where you are hearing from a deeply mean person's perspective, so that was neat. Her development gave me chills. The witches are preparing for war, and they are given these creatures as their mounts. The mounts are supposed to be mindless killing, flying machines. However, Manon develops a relationship with her mount, Abraxos. Abraxos is a literal slave, and he shows Manon that she is a slave to her culture. I cannot wait to see where the series takes her - hopefully with an alliance with Celaena.
4. Dorian and Chaol
I didn't want to hear from these two. Is that bad? Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed them both in the past books. They just aren't as exciting as witches or fay. I'm sad for Dorian, and that is all I have to say on that front. Chaol was annoying. He could not chose a side; he felt like it was between Caleana and Dorian BUT THEY ARE ON THE SAME SIDE. That just annoyed me. Chaol ended up making his choice in the worst possible moment...I won't spoil it.
Overall:
Yes, I loved it. Yes, you will love it. Yes, you need to drop everything and listen immediately. You will laugh, and you will probably cry. It is worth it.

Overkill
OMG. Character development overkill. The amount of time spent developing the relationship between certain characters drove me crazy. This book could have been cut by a third... but that's just me. There was also development on a separate set of characters that never actually come to play in this book and that irritated me too. The author seemed to like making things confusing as hell when it comes to Salaena, specifically with giving her so many alias (4, I think?). The base story is still pretty cool and more magic is being used now. While it would seem that the next book is going to bring the direct conflict between Salaena and the King, I wouldnt be surpised if book 4 dwells on Salaena and her assassin story and getting the word key back.

Self-flagellating misery porn.
This entire book is nothing but misery porn. The melodrama is so thick it could hold up a fork. No one is happy. Everyone is completely irrational. I want to spike everyone's punch with Zoloft. This book makes Catcher in the Rye seem cheerful by comparison.
I loved the first book. The main character was strong, sassy, bold, intelligent, brimming with defiance. The second book had its flaws and an overdone love triangle but I still liked it. This one is so bad that I couldn't even finish it. I had to stop because the main character's constant irrational, petulant behavior and relentless self-flagellation actually made me feel depressed. The negativity just never let up. The only bight spots were when the story left the main character and focused on what the supporting characters were doing, and even that was mediocre and not worth suffering through the whining. I won't be continuing this series, which is very disappointing because it started so strong.

Disappointed
I’ve loved all the books till this one!!!!!! The story is all over the place. It’s been so frustrating trying to follow this story line. And all the nonsense about these stupid witches. And the main girl that I don’t know what to call her because she now has 4 or more different names so far. Ugh I have a headache this book is so frustrating. Half of it doesn’t make sense.

big holes in character development
the writing was good but the characters had big holes.
the world's greatest assassin who is a virgin? she was physically abused by her master but he never had sex with her? she had no knowledge of the outdoors? I guess she only worked in the city and how did she travel between cities? the first book to the third book she increased the foul language.
a Captain of the Guard who had never killed despite working for the K ING of Blood?

Heir of Greatness
In the third installment of the Throne of Glass series, Heir of Fire, Celaena Sardothien embarks on a life-changing journey. New alliances are formed as tensions run high in the kingdoms.
Though I don’t usually have a lot of luck with fantasy series, I do enjoy this character-driven series quite a lot. Celaena’s a great heroine who has grown a lot over the course of the series. And the stakes keep getting higher for her. With the action moved to unfamiliar territory and Celaena on a new path, this is a transitional phase for her. I did miss Celaena’s interactions with her friends from the first two books, but we do meet a kick-ass new character in exchange so that’s almost a fair trade-off.
The fantasy elements really ramp up in this installment, and we get more acquainted with fae and witches. The action shifts between three separate but related stories in Heir of Fire- Celaena’s journey, the characters left behind in Adarlan (Dorian, Chaol, etc.) and the Blackbeak coven. I have to admit the chapters with the witches went over my head. There is a new character named Manon Blackbeak who seems important but for the life of me I couldn’t keep up with that storyline. I will definitely have to read a Recaptains recap before the next book.
What kept my interest is Celaena’s personal journey and revelations. I liked her alliance with Rowan, the fae prince. The prickly Rowan is a great addition to the series, and I’m curious to see what role he takes going forward.
Back in Adarlan, Chaol and Dorian are quite downcast without Celaena’s company, though it’s not long before they get distracted other pressing matters. Chaol seemed kind of lost in this installment and I hope for more Chaol and Celaena in the next book. A new character causes some trouble for Dorian and Chaol and I’m interested to see how the situation in Adarlan shakes out. Dorian really got to me in this book – lots of character growth there.
The romance is downplayed in this installment compared to Crown of Midnight, but that makes sense considering the journey Celaena is on. The strong friendships that build in Heir of Fire make you (almost) not notice the lack of romance.
This series really shines in audiobook format, with the excellent performance by Elizabeth Evans. She pronounces all those tricky words for you so you don’t have to try to make sense of them on your own. Evans gives a strong and consistent performance here and doesn’t distract for the story. She brings many different types of characters to life and is especially successful with capturing Celaena’s essence. Since Heir of Fire is over 20-hours long, you’ll get your money’s worth of your Audible credit.
This installment is a game changer in a lot of ways with so much to ponder and digest. The slow-burn action pays off in the end and leaves you clamoring for the next book.

My soul has been utterly ensnared by this series

I read books 1-5 then doubled back and re-read 3-5 then read the prequel (the assassins blade) then carried on again reading 1-5 all without pause. they are SO ridiculously good I have no words. every time I read them something new comes to light. some new angle or plot twist or hidden delight is revealed they're Oh so good.!!! have not been this entwined with a series since the Harry Potter books. a must read! push on after book 1 the story gets so damned good you shouldnt miss it!

What Happened????
Where does Heir of Fire rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
It should have been one of the best, but for some reason Elizabeth Evans seems to have forgotten how to read in this book. Thanks to her faltering, stuttering narration, this is no more than a so, so book
What other book might you compare Heir of Fire to, and why?
Don't know
What didn’t you like about Elizabeth Evans’s performance?
In the first three books of this series (that would be the Novellas and books one and two) Ms Evans had a lovely smooth, very professional reading style, which I really enjoyed listening to. For some reason, in this book, she seems to have had some sort of reading glitch, and her performance was halting and filled with annoying pauses, so that the thread of the story was lost. Having read these books in paperback format (except the latest book, "Empire of Storms") and having absolutely loved them, I was relieved when I listened to the first three, (the novellas and books one and two) to hear that they were being narrated so beautifully. Book three is one of my favorite books in the series, as it introduces the characters of Rowan and Manon, so I was not at all happy with Ms Evans stuttering, clumsy performance.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Several (in the paper back format). The impact of certain scenes was lost, thanks to Elizabeth Evans' inexplicably poor narration. Odd pauses, chopped the scenes up, so that they lost their dramatic impact. Very, very annoying.
Any additional comments?
I absolutely loved this book when I read the paperback format, but thanks to an inexplicably dreadful performance by Elizabeth Evans this was ruined. I really do hope she finds that smooth professional style she had in the first three books, when she reads the next book in this amazing series.

Amazing
Wow. This series just gets better and better. I loved this book. I fell even more in love with the characters, especially Dorian. And Rowan. Love him. I cannot wait to listen to the next book. My only gripe is that I still loathe the narrator. If I had a pound for the amount of times I heard her swallow I'd be a very rich woman. Every male character still sounds the same, which I hate. The only plus was that she's slowed the narration down slightly from that of the previous books. She also pronounced words differently than she did in the first books. If I didn't love this series so much the narrator would put me off reading the rest. I certainly wouldn't listen to another series with her narrating it. It's testament to how good this series is that once I finish listening to all the books, I'll immediately re listen to them.

I loved it. It has action and it's really exciting. I wouldn't down any of it. It contains a bit of violence so I would say 10+. To understand it you probably need to read the first two before, but overall amazing.
