Publisher's Summary

Listen introduces parents to five simple, practical skills even the most harried parent can use. These tools will help parents strengthen their connection with their child and help build their child's intelligence, cooperation, and ability to learn as they grow. The audiobook delivers detailed information, accompanied by more than 100 real-life stories from parents who've used this approach to address the root causes of their child's difficult behaviors.

Five surprising things parents will learn:

  • You don't have to reward or punish willful children to get them to cooperate
  • Aggressive kids are frightened kids, and there are simple tools to ease their fear so they don't need to lash out
  • Your willingness to just listen to crying or tantrums, often is enough to heal a child's fears and hurts
  • Safe play during which your kid becomes the boss, can reveal his hidden feelings - and heal them too
  • Parents who regularly listen to one another's struggles, without judging or advising, often clear so much toxic emotion that their children benefit greatly

The ONLY parenting book you need

I am a parent and school counsellor (and before that, a teacher), and I have read just about every parenting and positive discipline book out there. I care deeply about conscious, respectful parenting and education, but it's something that hasn't always come easily, given my own history of childhood abuse and neglect. The techniques in this book WORK. Firstly, they are grouped into five different tools, which makes learning and implementing each tool actually achieveable! (No more reading/listening to a book and forgetting 90% of what you need to do.) Secondly, there are countless case studies for various childhood issues with an explanation of the tool/s used. Does this approach take time to implement? YES. This is not just more parenting scripts about how to 'validate feelings and uphold the limit anyway'. It's about regularly connecting with your child through play (Special Time), being a kind yet firm presence in their life (Setting Limits), initiating play to resolve tension (Play Listening), taking the time to slow down, listen and connect when your child is upset (Stay Listening), and finding another adult that YOU can connect with and share the inevitable hardships of parenting (The Listening Partnership). If this is the only book you buy, it will be money well spent.

This is a very long-winded blah blah blah book

This audio book takes soooo long to get to the point. Its not until chapter 6 that the real content actually begins, but I still haven’t got to anything that is practical or specific. It’s very long-winded.
