About this listen
An exhilarating thriller from best-selling author Dayton Ward set in the universe of Star Trek: The Next Generation, following Captain Jean-Luc Picard and his crew as they explore the previously uncharted and dangerous Odyssean Pass.
Surveying a nebula as part of their continuing exploration of the previously uncharted Odyssean Pass, Captain Jean-Luc Picard and the crew of the starship Enterprise encounter a rogue planet. Life signs are detected on the barren world's surface, and then a garbled message is received: a partial warning to stay away at all costs. Determined to render assistance, Picard dispatches Commander Worf and an away team to investigate, but their shuttlecraft is forced to make an emergency landing on the surface - moments before all contact is lost and the planet completely disappears.
Worf and his team learn that this mysterious world is locked into an unending succession of random jumps between dimensions, the result of an ambitious experiment gone awry. The Enterprise crew members and the alien scientists who created the technology behind this astonishing feat find themselves trapped, powerless to break the cycle. Meanwhile, as the planet continues to fade in and out of various planes of existence, other parties have taken notice....

I can't write much about what happened without giving spoilers, so I'll just say that my assumptions were turned on their head within the first 2 chapters. I say this as a good thing.
After that, the story tends to jump between multiple locations and I spent most of the story trying to get my head around which location we were in at any given time. It was slightly hard to follow, but I eventually got the hang of it. Not sure how that could have been improved - it was just a side effect of this story's setting.
I'd strongly recommend setting aside at least 30+ minute listening sessions, because my short 10-15 minute car trips led to me needing to skip back every time I got in the car to remember what happened last time. More so than with other books.
Overall, I really enjoyed the story and the depth of the characters.
The story did a good job of covering off lots of different "what if they did this" scenarios and then ruling them out, usually through internal monologue of the ship's captain considering and then dismissing in their mind certain courses of action. It worked well.
Characters acted how I expected them to, and yet I didn't know what would happen next and wanted to keep listening to find out.
I would recommend this to any fan of the TV show.
Difficult to follow at first, but worth it
