About this listen

Claire Barclay finds a home in England after 25 years of travelling. She has money, a tour guide business, and ambitions. She is shocked by the murder in her quiet village, but is not going to give up on the haven she has finally found. With the help of her sister, the barracuda barrister, her new dog, new friends, and the unexpected stimulus of a new man in her life, she deals with suspicion, confusion, and threats.

At first, I was doubtful about this audiobook; it seemed as though it would be a rambling account of life in an English country village but it soon became very obvious that this was anything but. The storyline seems rambling at times but with a little perseverance and the excellent narrating skills of Bianca Amato, it comes together very well. I have to say that I didn't guess the culprit which is a great plus as I manage to do so with many audiobooks. Bianca's impeccable narration (well almost, with just a couple of lapses into American pronunciation) raises the listener's interest to a high level and keeps it there.

The story was fine, however having a protagonist whose identity rests substantially on her upper class British language but uses almost exclusively American vocab was so distracting I’m not sure I noticed a lot of the rest of it. I guess I now have a far better appreciation for what I had considered a rather self-evident cliché - “write what you know”.

Conspicuously not at all British
