About this listen

Hanna Harp’s incendiary debut paranormal dark romance, perfect for fans of Sadie Kincaid’s Forged in Blood and Keri Lake’s Anathema, follows Cade, a devoted hunter fighting to shield his sister Callisto from a haunting generational curse, but when a mysterious spirit begins to break down his defenses, both his passion and his will ignite into a scorching, fourth-wall breaking read that places you at the heart of the story.

Warning: This is not just a book. It’s an invitation. A contract sealed the moment you turn the page. If you choose to read, you choose to be seen. If you choose to follow him, he will hunt you. This story does not end when you close the book...

Cade Halloway is a hunter, raised by the Order of the Covenant—a cult built on blood, sacrifice, and power. He tracks and eliminates the powerful and corrupt. A predator disguised as a savior, but he’s not here to save the innocent. He’s here to rip apart the monsters who hide in plain sight. For years, he has been their weapon. Until he discovered the truth...his sister Callisto is slated to be their next offering.

Callisto Halloway was supposed to die for the Order, but her brother has other plans. While in hiding, unable to help or fight, she spends her time trying to control the power she was born with, the power that the Order will kill for. But independence comes at a price, and her uncontrolled power summons a demon far more dangerous than the Order. One that wants more than her body or her soul.

Now, on the run from the Order, Cade’s only purpose is to save his sister. But Callisto’s power has consequences. There’s now an unseen force—a spectral presence—following Cade he can’t explain and can't escape. A presence that breaks down all of his defenses, and tears down walls even he didn’t know he had built, as he finds himself drawn to it in mind, spirit, and body. And it may be the only thing that can save him and Callisto.

You.

Loved! Kept to wondering what’s coming next the whole way through! I can’t wait for the next book!

Why do I do this to myself!

Haunting the Hunter was a 5 star book for me.
I love listening to the audio books while reading along on my kindle and let me tell you, The narrators did a great job bringing the characters to life. I LOVE when audio books have the voice actors saying their lines in other characters chapters, So that was a big win for me personally. It feels so much more immersive.
The story line itself was awesome and its such a cool concept. Cant wait to find out what happens next!

Amazing story and excellent narrators

So first of all. this was fun. it was dark with a nicely cryptic witchy storyline that sort of got answers and asked more...whixh for book one makes sense

however... the whole breaking the fourth wall aspect was completely oversold. this isn't a love story between me and a main character... if anything Cade is more of a side character with a few chapters and some (decently) hot scenes. they are nicely done but from how this was marketed to how it comes across..well I think chalk meet cheese.

I obviously listened, but have to say I'm not sure it would translate well in the written form, I think it's better as a audio, and let's face it Teddy Hamilton talking to you helps a lot, his voice could melt butter and when he's saying how much he likes things I'm doing...well 🥵

anyway. moving on.

this book is the Callisto and Alabaster story, it's their love story/mystery not mine. it's still a fun read and I enjoyed the suave presence Alabaster has and that Callie isn't a whiny wall flower... and jack..oh poor jack.
I will listen to book two, but I'll go into with open eyes and lower expectations about 'my immersion'.

enjoyable but ...

The idea for this book was so creative and I was really excited about it however...

This book was really not for me. For a first ever book I definitely give kudos. The author had a fun creative idea and gave it a good shot, and I honestly hope she keeps working on her craft.

For me, the pacing was off, it was about 18 chapters before I really had a clear picture about the backstory.
Every male leaned hard into toxic male tropes... all of the tropes so not a single character felt like they had any real redeeming qualities. Maybe Alabaster... maybe.
The female lead is supposed to be oh so powerful but its all fear fear fear, oh look an orgasm, fear fear fear. The damsel in distress was taken too far and she gets treated like a child constantly.
The amount of times I had to put it down because I just could not with these characters.

But just because it's not my cup of tea, doesn't mean others won't love it so don't let me rain on your parade, the author worked hard to bring the community something she obviously loves and was passionate about.

Not my kind of hero

If you go into this book with an expectation of the fourth wall break being the focus of the story, I fear you will be disappointed. I feel that this aspect of Haunting the Hunter has been misrepresented.

There is enough intrigue in the plot and character motivations for this book to be marketed on its own merits, rather than relying on overselling the Reader x Cade gimmick (which is only a minor part of the story).

There are some issues with pacing, and it’s worth noting that the audio narration is not consistently duet style throughout.

Perhaps book two will bring things together, though I haven’t yet decided if I’ll pick it up.

Misrepresentation

I was really excited for Haunting the Hunter — especially since it was advertised as a fourth-wall-breaking romance where the reader is the love interest to Cade (voiced by Teddy Hamilton). That concept alone hooked me, and I even pre-ordered the book because it sounded so unique.

Unfortunately, the execution didn’t live up to the idea. The story ended up including multiple narrators who weren’t mentioned in any of the promotional material, which was disappointing since I expected the focus to stay on the reader–Cade dynamic. The voice of Alabastor, in particular, felt subpar — the accent and performance didn’t quite land, and it pulled me out of the experience.
The pacing was another issue. The beginning dragged on far too long, and I found myself wanting to skip ahead just to get back to the parts that actually held my interest. Honestly, the whole book could have worked better as a short story — tighter, more immersive, and without all the filler that slowed things down.

Overall, I still think the idea of this story was great — breaking the fourth wall is such a clever concept for a romance — but the execution fell flat. I was really rooting for this one, but it just didn’t deliver what was promised.

Oversold, under delivered
