Summary

She’s loved by all who meet her

But someone wants her gone…

Alec Salter doesn’t seem worried when his wife, Charlotte, fails to attend his 50th birthday party and, with most of their small village in attendance, it’s hours before anyone realises she’s missing. As the days pass and still no sight, Charlotte’s daughter, Etty, and her sons, Niall, Paul and Ollie, all struggle to understand her disappearance. Left in limbo with no answers, the Salter children try and go on with their lives, all the while suspecting their mother’s potential killer could be very close to home.

Thirty years later, Etty helps move Alec, stricken with dementia, into an elder care facility. But when her childhood friends, Greg and Morgan Ackerley, start a surprisingly popular true crime podcast investigating Charlotte’s presumed death, the town’s buried secrets – and the Salters’ – might finally come to light.

With the podcast turning the case into national news, Inspector Maud O’Connor is dispatched to investigate. Frustrated by the sexism and incompetence of her colleagues, Maud will stop at nothing to uncover the terrible truth of what really happened to Charlotte Salter.

A nerve-tingling and atmospheric thriller from master of suspense Nicci French about families shattered by tragedy and the secrets that have been waiting decades to be revealed.

i got this based on the reputation/reviews of Nicci French. It wasn't as clever as i'd expected but was definitely enjoyable.

The first third sets up the historical crime -- tragedy strikes in two posh families. In the second third, posh kids affected by tragedy have grown into slightly obnoxious, damaged adults. This bit is a little dull, largely due to the unappealing characters -- BUT the final third really rocks! At last, a great character -- DI Maud O'Connor - is introduced. Not before time, as every member of the police until then has proved severely incompetent.

On balance, i'd rather have read a whole book about Maud...

Good last third

Great story, excellent narration. Only complaint is the police (excluding Maude) sounded so incredibly stupid it made me mad.

Felt like 3 books in one

I’m really liking Maud as a character. The story was intriguing and I could pick the murderer. Thanks for another great plot that I could not stop listening to.

I cannot understand the high reviews for this. The narration was whiny and irritating, but perhaps the best that could be done with the material. Extremely unlikeable characters with whom it was impossible to sympathise and relate. The story was banal and trite, and way too long. All the police procedural sections were so cliched it was embarrassing. The lead detective was (I assume) supposed to be a study in contrasts (super-confident in her job, uncertain in her personal life) but it didn't gel. The final denouement was just 'meh'. It was a relief it was over.

Nicci French's early books were great, but it seems they've well and truly dropped the ball of late. I'm not sure why they feel they need to create such horrible people. The Dr Frieda Klein series is another case in point.
