About this listen

Before a woman is anything else, she is a daughter. Her relationship with her mother anchors every other relationship in her life. Yet as an adult she may still blame her mother, try to change her, or fail to speak out about issues that matter. Harriet Lerner on Mothers and Daughters is a personal conversation for every woman who seeks to better understand the mystery of the mother-daughter bond. Dr. Lerner illustrates why our mothers inevitably disappoint us, and why it is so hard to stay connected - and stay ourselves - when differences arise. With specific skills and guidelines for changing the patterns that keep us stuck, Harriet Lerner on Mothers and Daughters represents this esteemed psychologist's most complete work on the central relationship in the emotional lives of women.

Harriet Lerner is a master and always worth hearing. This is good for women seeking to build more compassionate and empathetic relationships with their mothers, but she does seem to put the burden on daughters to carry out what she calls courageous acts of change, even when there is abuse or a non responsive mum. I felt unsure about this, and wondered at what point that would be a bad idea, but appreciate her positive tone and her commitment to building love. This is very short but makes sense alongside her longer books too to see how she approaches relationships in general.

Very disappointed. I usually love Harriets' stuff. it wasn't made clear that this wasn't a book but a short talk that, as others have said, could have been shorter as they spoke so slowly. The content is also pretty basic around societies ideas of women, etc.
There just wasn't the depth or insight normally found with Harriet's books. I regret using a credit on this and this Audible should make very clear when something is a talk versus a book.

Not a book, just a talk

really didn't rate it. it's very short and could probably be even shorter because the narrator talks too slow. no value for money.

Not a book! Its one chapter and a generalisation . Disappointed . It gives limited information. Very slow narration makes it even more annoying to listen to.
