Publisher's Summary

For the first time, HRH The Prince of Wales shares his views on how our most pressing modern challenges - from climate change to poverty - are rooted in mankind's disharmony with nature, presenting a compelling case that the solution lies in our ability to regain a balance with the world around us.

With its holistic approach, this provocative and well-reasoned book takes the discussion of sustainability and climate change in a new direction. Prince Charles shows how the solutions to problems like climate change lie not only in technology but in our ability to change the way we view the modern world.

For decades, the Prince of Wales has been studying a wide array of disciplines to understand every aspect of man's impact on the natural world, and in that time he has examined everything from architecture to organic farming to sustainable economics. Now, for the first time, he speaks out about his years of research, presenting a fascinating look at how modern industrialization has led us to a state of disharmony with nature, created climate change, and pushed us to the brink of disaster.

From the rice farms of India to the prairies of America's corn belt, from the temples of Ancient Egypt to the laboratories of industrial designers, Harmony spans the globe to identify the different ways that contemporary life has abandoned the hard-earned practices of our history, a shift that has spurred a host of social problems and accelerated climate change.

Drawing on cases from farming, health care, transportation, and design, the Prince of Wales also offers solutions for change, creating a new vision for our world, one that incorporates the traditional wisdom of our past with the modern science of our present to avert catastrophe. In the end, Harmony paints a holistic portrait of what we as a species have lost in the modern age, while outlining the steps we can take to regain the harmony of our ancestors.

Well written & well read. HRH missed his true calling, teacher of common sense re the wonders of nature! A treasure of a book.

I’m not going to lie, the first couple of chapters some of the language baffled me ( yes English is my first language), & my brain split in 2 as he spoke with regards to his pet projects where no doubt his heritage & thus power of privilege open doors to expert advice, machinery & simply resources not freely available to the masses regarding organic eating ( my bias of ugly food at the markets that cost triple other food of similarly shaped not considered organic, environmentally friendly etc. So there was a personal hurdle.

However his chapters regarding education camps, breakfast activities & the science alongside humanity proved how disruptive children benefited from time with animals, forests, feeding times enthralled me to read on and on like a great novel you can’t put down. His use of ancient scholars plus science & humanities was like the best parts of a Bachelor or Arts degree put together - sociology, arts, history, politics, philosophy, archaeology & architecture simplified. Beautifully spoken, underlying passion & perfect sense. Concentrate on our health & the rest follows suit. Lives improve through better decisions, more reliance on seasonal food less reliance on pharmaceuticals. While the industrial revolution brought wonderful inventions designed to simplify lives, overuse has depleted many first world nations of natural resources in a fight to remain competitive. That harms families in the immediate & long term, for all generations. He too explained how to incorporate, not necessarily reinvent the wheel just tweak a few things ie more nature based activities in schools amounts to interest in ecology but less behavioural problems for all, leading to happier healthier adults, collectively smarter communities. Food and healthy land for the future generations.
It’s sad to think in the UK a third of teenagers are obese. The reality is the same in 🇦🇺. And too USA. It’s a fact people don’t want to admit to themselves. Obesity is responsible for many other chronic ( lifestyle) dis-ease issues like heart problems, high cholesterol and an array of auto immune conditions ie eating patterns. That in part only part can sometimes be attributed to crop pesticides and cheap convenience food. Yet we globally grow enough food to feed the population is shameful. Through our practices of waste, worse.
The authors have done a great deal of research and well put together regarding how the reader might contribute to a more sustainable future.

There’s no preaching however there’s no getting around it, communities that have green spaces and eat better, live healthier in that such habits are passed down. Exercise is encouraged together. Town planning benefits it’s citizens & individuals who feel respected in turn respect their locality with a sense of pride. Human nature drives outcomes ( and unfortunately it’s why gyms prevail as the outdoor space is not safe for women, children & pets always) so along with parks, lights & security a factor of 21 century is costly.
Still the potential for Harmony far outweighs “ a diseased planet” . A great book & one of my reads🙏🙏🙏

A great read!

I loved this book. Not only does it give you a little (probably unintended) insight into our future king it touches on many faces of the earth and those natural societies, including ourselves, that live on it. The all encompassing views of regeneration of societies and the earth was just what I needed to think deeper on a subject I already have a passion for.
