Publisher's Summary

Unearths the stories of the little-known but powerful elder women in European myth and folklore, inspiring listeners to radically reimagine the last decades of their lives as the most dynamic of all

Western folklore and mythology are rife with brilliantly creative, fulfilled, feisty, and furious role models for aging women, despite our culture's focus on youthfulness. In her exciting new book, mythologist and psychologist Sharon Blackie explores these archetypes, presenting them in a way sure to appeal to contemporary women. Drawing inspiration from these examples, women can reclaim midlife as a liberating, alchemical moment rich with possibility and their elder years as a path to dynamic power.

After menopause, women can expect to live another forty to fifty years, making this stage of life longer than childbearing years. As Blackie describes it, midlife is the threshold to decades of opportunity and profound transformation, a time to learn, flourish, and claim the desires and identities that are often limited during earlier life stages. This is a time for gaining new perspectives, challenging and evolving our belief systems, exploring our calling, uncovering meaning, and ultimately finding healing for our accumulated wounds.

Not at all what I was hoping for

From the summary in the catalogue, I expected this book to draw far more on the mythology and archetypes of older women. There was a little of this, but far more of the author talking about herself, placing an uncomfortable significance on the meaning and importance of her dreams, arguing against HRT and for 'experiencing the journey' of menopause (even though she missed menopause herself because she was on the pill) and a weirdly large chunk of "I'm not saying anything against trans people, but older women should be allowed to speak against their inclusion in women's spaces because we have been silenced throughout history".
I admit I didn't make it through to the end, but by around 60% of the book, the only older woman archetype she has really identified has been the witch / angry older woman / 'truth-teller'. If you don't *want* to live a life defined by finally expressing long-suppressed rage and occasional cackling, she doesn't seem to have much to offer. It's not that this is the archetype she has decided to focus on, she seems to believe it's the only role model older women have.

I had high hopes for this book; instead, it's the first book I've ever returned in five years of membership.

Embracing a Potent, Meaningful Midlife

Another wonderful book by one of my favourite authors. Re-shaping midlife means a step towards the women and elders we want to be in a world that wants us to shut up and disappear the moment our ovaries shut up shop.
Full of folk stories, myth, legend and real life experiences of women embracing a new and potent midlife.
Every woman should read this book.

Absolutely divine

This is one of those books that make your heart ache a little when you realise it is coming to an end. It is rich and nourishing and piercing. And it arrived in my life just when I needed it most. I recommend it for all women, but particularly those embarking upon elderhood.

I loved this book from start to finish. It sang to my soul and offered insight for those of us that don’t have mothers, aunts or elders around.

Captivating

I loved this book, written and narrated by Sharon Blackie. It was entertaining, enchanted and honest. I am grateful for the work Sharon is doing, in bringing to light, reformed ideas of the aging feminine and of elderhood.

loved it from start to finish

A fabulous starting point for anyone on the menopause journey. This book takes the reader on a quest into the unknown final stages of life and questions what that can look like, and how we can sit with this rite of passage. What I love most is the European focus as this is my heritage and I want to embrace my ancestral mythology and bring it into my life in a stronger way.
