Engelbert Humperdinck (1854-1921) komponierte zahlreiche Lieder und Orchesterwerke - am liebsten aber schrieb er Opern für Kinder. Nach seinem Studium am Konservatorium in Köln und der königlichen Musikschule in München wurde er Assistent beim berühmten Richard Wagner und später sogar dessen musikalischer Leiter der Bayreuther Festspiele. Durch seine Kinderoper "Hänsel und Gretel", 1893 in Weimar uraufgeführt, wurde Engelbert Humperdinck weltweit bekannt.
