About this listen

Penguin presents the audiobook edition of Gypsy by Lesley Pearse, read by Heather Bleasdale.

Gypsy is a compelling historical story of survival from international number one best-selling author Lesley Pearse.

Liverpool, 1893, and tragedy sends Beth Bolton on a journey far from home....

Fifteen-year-old Beth's dreams are shattered when she, her brother, Sam, and her baby sister, Molly, are orphaned. Sam believes that only in America can they make their fortunes, so, reluctantly leaving Molly with adoptive parents, brother and sister embark on the greatest adventure of their lives.

Onboard the steamer to New York, there are rogues aplenty. But Beth's talent with the fiddle earns her the nickname Gypsy - and the friendship of charismatic gambler Theo and sharp-witted Londoner Jack. And after dodging trouble across America, finally the foursome head for the dangerous mountains of Canada and the Klondike River in search of gold.

How far must Beth go to find happiness? And will her travels lead this gypsy to a place she can call home?

This book had me enthralled from start to finish. I loved the diversity and where the story took us.

This book was a really enjoyable read. About a quarter of the way through I started to wonder where it was going but it’s worth persevering. A nice mix of adventure, hardship and love. Nice to read a book with a strong, intelligent and likeable female lead which I’ve personally found really difficult to find.

Strong characters, good story and well narrated.

One of the best books I have listened to for a while. The characters felt believable and it kept me coming back for more. Very hard to put it down. And although fictional I feel like I know a lot more about this part of history now

Highly Enjoyable

1890s over two continents. Four people all vitally connected in so many ways. I liked the Liverpool accent and the reader performed other voices quite well too. I had no idea how gold fever affects people, and I am all the wiser for the history and geography lessons. Oh and love and lust are quite graphic emotions. A good read that I looked forward to each evening this week. Quite different to Trust Me and Rosie, but good to know the author has varying styles. I will read more of her books.

Another great history trip
