I den första delen av två om Sveriges konung Gustav Vasa behandlas tiden mellan hans födelse 1496 och fram till 1540. Vi får följa hans barndom, genom upproret mot danskarna i Dalarna fram till hans kröning den 6 juni 1523. Vidare genom reformationen, reduktionen och alla uppror mot honom, genomförda av de som inte gillade hans styre och önskan om förändring.
Vid den första delens slut är relationen med Danmark mycket ansträngd, något som snart kom att leda till konflikt. Sven Wikberg (1890-1959) var en svensk författare och översättare som skrev flera historiska biografier och ungdomsböcker under sin levnadstid. Wikberg var även en skicklig översättare.
