Jonathan Swifts Werk ist eine unverblümte Satire auf die Gesellschaft zu jener Zeit und viel eher eine Streitschrift als ein frühes unpolitisches Werk der Fantastik. Als Gegenreaktion entstanden daher auch "entschärfte" Ausgaben, in denen aus dem brillanten, scharfzüngigen Roman ein Kinderbuch für "einfache Gemüter" geworden war.
