Possibly the best of the series
No punches pulled here as Kerr has Gunther chasing war criminals against the background of the seamless transfer from Germany's National Socialist government to the post-war era and the unfairness of Germany 's position on Greek debt. Truly fascinating and as always well read by Harding.

Bernie seeks atonement in penultimate outing
It's 1957 and Bernie is going by another name as he moves from morgue attendant to insurance loss adjuster in this complex labyrinthine tale of skullduggery, double crossing and daring do amidst the post- war politics of the new Europe. Shipped off to Greece to investigate the loss of a diving boat and some priceless artefacts, not to mention stolen gold, Bernie is soon up to his hips in deadly gangsters and even more dangerous femme fatales. And the Israelis are interested in him too...

Never Ask Someone What They Did In The War.
1957, and ex Berlin cop Bernie Gunther has a new identity and job as a Munich mortuary attendant in post war Germany. But circumstances and recognition by an old acquaintance get him a better paying job working as a claims assessor for an insurance company. Sent to Greece to investigate the sinking of a ship, Gunther discovers that things are more complex than even he might anticipate, and the quiet life he craved is not to be found there.
Somehow, this reader only recently discovered the works of Philip Kerr, and this, number 13 in the Bernie Gunther series, is the first that I have read. How fortunate I am as I now have the twelve preceding stories to enjoy. A marvellous melding of genres including detective, thriller, spy, conspiracy, historical and travel, this book was tensely written, characters so real they seemed alive, the whole atmosphere of post war Europe, both physical and psychological, there for everyone to experience for themselves. All is conveyed with an excellent brevity of description, his use of similes providing instant colour, as in the man with a 'cigarette hanging from his lip like a clothes peg', and another with a speaking voice 'like dark honey'. Jeff Harding's narration, as he tells the story in the first person from Gunther's cynical perspective, is performed perfectly, a slightly travelled voice, nicely paced, with good modulation and inflection, and occasional shield of emotion. His individual voicings of the various lrotagonists, male and female is also admirable. A fine performance.
Although 13th in the series, Greeks Bearing Gifts can most certainly be read as a stand alone novel. An excellent read and now I look forward to catching up with books 1 - 12. Highly recommended.

Another great book by the late Philip Kerr, superbly narrated by Jeff Harding, whose voice somehow adds an authentic atmosphere to the gangster-like Nazis of the period of the Bernie Gunther series. This is not my favourite as I prefer the novels set during the Second World War. I have only one more book to read to complete the set. I have rated all the novels from three to five stars. A bit like symphonic works there is a similarity in content and style - to be expected of course. This only adds to the ease of reading or listening. I implore anyone who picks up this book or listens on Audible to go back to the first one and go through them in chronological order.

I so enjoyed this book ..I was worried after reading so many of his books I might finally be disappointed with Bernie .Gunther ...but no chance excellent story with enough history to make it all believable . I cannot stress how important it is that Phillip does not feel the need to fill his pages with swearing rather than content... well done an author who gives you your monies worth!
