About this listen

I tell you, you meet some strange characters in this game....

Boasting the biggest beats in the world - some as large as France - Australia's outback police have seen it all: natural disasters, incredible acts of selflessness, unspeakable crimes and daring rescues, just to name a few. And they've met some unforgettable characters along the way: from the murderer who stuffed his victims' bodies down wombat holes to the policeman who arrested his own wife to the prisoner who risked his life to rescue his own captor from certain death.

Master storyteller Bill 'Swampy' Marsh has travelled the length and breadth of the country to gather their tales of adventure and misadventure, drama and mayhem, and larrikinism and laughter, to create this memorable collection of real life stories about those on the frontline in the heart of Australia.

Great narrator voice, Bill, for these stories of our past and of the police who had to be jack-of-all-trades in the vast outback of our country. I enjoyed the history of places like Bourke.
I hope poor dead Grandma’s body was eventually found!

Really enjoyed the stories. Found the inflection of the narrators hard at time and the pronunciation of local names could have been better especially from Kate

A wonderful collection of stories, giving insight into the ways policing has changed over the decades, and the ways it's still the same, for better or worse, but mostly for better

This was a refreshing read about life in Outback Australia
before the ugliness of cultural ignorance, population growth and
racism arrived.
Thoroughly enjoyable listen, thank you Bill and Kate :-)

Australian outback policing when Aborigines were treated respectfully

In the audio recording it isn't very clear when the stories change to having been a different police person's story. There are also stories from members of the public that just include a police officer as part of the tale.
