Revelation and betrayal!

Dr. Miriam Dagger is a scientist who for the past fifteen years has been working on a virus that would ease the pains of childbirth. During a lecture tour to promote her virus, she was kidnapped in Kabul Afghanistan. In the U.K., the Prime Minister quietly ordered elements of SAS to investigate the kidnapping, and as routine, Dr. Dagger as well. While searching Dagger’s home, a video was found revealing Dagger’s admission that Afghanistan was her birthplace, her revulsion with the U.S. political deceptions, and that her virus, that she was giving them, would turn the tide of war toward her homeland. This shocking revelation set the United States and Great Britain on a desperate course to find Dagger and stop her. SUPERB

This retrospective prequel to Alan McDermott’s hugely successful Tom Gray series is no ordinary military thriller. Set in Afghanistan, Sgt Tom Gray and his team of tough SAS fighters, team up (reluctantly initially) with the USA’s equivalent, ‘Delta Force’, to combat a new elite army of Taliban fighters. The plot is very original, the characters well-formed and the action is gripping. And in typical McDermott style, the story develops in ways you will not see coming.

As usual, Andy Stevenson’s narration and particularly his interpretation of the characters, is very realistically fashioned, to the point that it is hard to believe all the different voices and personalities are being delivered by the same person. Another excellent performance from him.

In a word, this audiobook is superb on all counts and is highly recommended.

Engaging plot

Special forces. Espionage. A war zone. Family on the home front.
This book delivers on these with a mostly-satisfying plot.

The challenge is that it is clearly a prequel. Not having read anything in the series, I got the sense that scenes were meant to explain some later event or reaction rather than the current novel’s progress in its own right.

That being said, it is a full novel snd stands alone as a complete novel in its own right.
