Schillers Ballade Der Graf von Habsburg entstand 1803 und gehört zu seinen spätestens lyrischen Arbeiten. Auf den Stoff stieß er bei den Vorarbeiten zu Wilhelm Tell, als er sich mit der Geschichte der Schweiz befasste. Für Schiller eher eigentümlich setzt er hierin ganz auf die christliche Anschauung, dass ein tugendhaftes, gottesfürchtiges Leben noch auf Erden Belohnung findet.
