About this listen

When Gone with the Wind appeared in 1936, it became on overnight sensation. Nothing like it in American literature had ever been seen. It went on to win the Pulitzer Prize and become one of the most celebrated films of all time. It has sold more than 30 million copies worldwide and been translated into 27 languages.

Gone with the Wind is both an historical novel and an examination of the bewildering changes that swept Georgia in the 1860s. The novel begins just before the Civil War opens and ends in 1871. During those intervening years Mitchell’s novel illustrates the struggles of the Georgians who lived through the Civil War and Reconstruction eras.

Here are the most famous characters in American literature: handsome, controversial Rhett Butler; spoiled, flirtatious Scarlett O'Hara; aristocratic gentleman Ashley Wilkes; and saintly Melanie Hamilton. As the lives of these and other equally fascinating characters play out against the chaotic background of war and Reconstruction, Gone with the Wind scales heights of human drama that have rarely been reached.

Critic Reviews

“The narrative is excruciatingly vivid. For days after reading Gone with the Wind, the reader lives the experiences of the characters Margaret Mitchell has given the world.” (London Times)

“No reader can come away without a sense of the tragedy that overcame the planting families in 1865 and without a better understanding of the background of present-day Southern life.” (The New York Times)

So many layers to this novel, it took me a little while to get used to the narrator, however after a while I couldn’t imagine the tale being narrated by anyone else.

Wonderfully rich storytelling…

Such a great narrator

I was confronted by the frank, brutal, racist language and mindset of this archaic saga. I am appalled when I recall that this was once considered a classic and that my mother's generation revered the book. The narration is skillful and professional, the story is chilling.

An archaic, flawed legacy

I was t ready for this,

I know it’s got a reputation for being an authentic representation of how life was in the days of the civil war, but I struggled with the language, and harsh sexual and racial overtones of the book.

I must admit though, the end is one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever read/listened to.

The movie was so censored compared to this.

Loved the movie, shocked by the book.

Such an incredible book. A classic saga with engaging characters, action, romance, war, you name it - it's here. I've read this twice now and never cease to be amazed by how much Scarlett can irritate you, as a reader, while you simultaneously experience the world through her eyes. Beautifully written.

A beautiful classic

Amazing! From the story itself, to the narration. Will be reaching for this one again in the not too distant future 🙂

Hanging on every word

Except the voices for female characters, which switched me off, but I picked it up again and made to the last. Love it

All time favourite

The narrators voice captured the velvet deep voice of Rhett Butler, the voice of Ashley, Melanie, Scarlett, Mammie, the Irish, Yankees , every character .. led us through the emotions of this long saga! At the end I cried in disbelief and regret along with Scarlett! I didn’t want the story to end! It’s the second time I’ve listened to this story, and I will listen to it again. Outstanding! Unforgettable!
I can’t fault this narrator, the production, including the musical interludes. Such a bittersweet love story.
I’d rate it the best audible book I’ve ever listened to.

Narrator was outstanding! The deep velvet voice of Rhett.. you felt it all through this long saga!
