Editorial reviews

The best-selling Gone Girl written by Gillian Flynn and narrated by Julia Whelan and Kirby Heyborne is an audiobook so affecting it will have you looking at the closest members of your family and wondering how well you really know them at all. Now also a major film starring Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike, this is the story of a missing wife, a distraught husband and a web of lies so thick it engulfs an entire community. You will listen wide-eyed and heart-pounding through the night, desperate to know their fate. This is a thriller of incredible depth. Available now from Audible.

Publisher's Summary

What are you thinking, Amy? The question I've asked most often during our marriage, if not out loud, if not to the person who could answer. I suppose these questions storm cloud over every marriage: What are you thinking? How are you feeling? Who are you? What have we done to each other? What will we do? Just how well can you ever know the person you love?

These are the questions that Nick Dunne must ask himself on the morning of his fifth wedding anniversary, when his wife Amy suddenly disappears. The police immediately suspect Nick. Amy's friends reveal that she was afraid of him, that she kept secrets from him. He swears it isn't true. A police examination of his computer shows strange searches. He says they aren't his. And then there are the persistent calls on his mobile phone.

So what really did happen to Nick's beautiful wife? And what was in that half-wrapped box left so casually on their marital bed? In this novel, marriage truly is the art of war.

Slow to start and pace was a bit too slow for me

I struggled through the first 1/3 of this audiobook. I don't think I would have finished the actual book if I had to read it. It needed to be trimmed back. The reading performances are also drawn out --I played it back at 1.5x just to get through it. Once the story picks up, it is quite satisfying, however its hard to feel sympathy for either of the main characters. Perfect trust fund socialite marries selfish husband. They never really grow or develop as people, which ultimately makes the ending a little hollow and unfulfilling. The plot and narrative format of switching voices makes the story entertaining, and the ending is ultimately worth it, if you can get past the beginning.

time waster

Waited for ages for the story to improve, unending and monotonous. Dissappointing couldn't finish or concentrate on the monotonous narrator

Couldn't keep listening

I tried, really tried, but I just could not keep listening to this narration. I had enjoyed to movie and really wanted to 'read' the unabridged novel, but the woman's voice is unbearable, at least to my non-American ear :(

Why was this ever published?
A self indulgent garbage skip of mindless drivel.
Avoid at all cost.

Male Voice Actor Is Monotonous; Hard To Focus

I love Gillian Flynn snd the movie version of Gone Girl. I had high expectations when listening to the audiobook. I've tried so many times to listen and finish it but I've struggled focusing on how monotonous the male voice was. The female voice was alright. The male voice was the worst. It took me a couple of rewind to know if he's narrating or saying a dialogue. I really wish they can redo the audiobook. I love the story but the voice actor was making it so bad. I don't wanna finish it. Can I refund/exchange?

what a waste of time

This book has been an utter waste of time. I'm disappointed in myself for hoping it would get better and staying until the end. The narration was terrible too... I hated everything about it.
