Publisher's Summary

When you spend your life at the top, there's only one direction you can go.

Pro alpine skier Aspen Archer's downfall happened in the worst possible way - a career-ending crash on a gold medal run at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. Aspen packed up her broken life, picked up her broken body, and now hides in comfortable obscurity at ski resorts around the world, coaching tourists and ignoring her problems.

Cate Tierney knows who Aspen Archer is, but the last place she expected to meet the former Olympian was during a ski trip to Australia. Hurt by a past relationship, and with a teenage daughter to protect, Cate's initial reluctance is quickly overcome by her intense attraction. But with Cate's vacation ending in a few short weeks and Aspen's aversion to staying in one place, can their encounter be anything more than a fling?

When Cate discovers Aspen's secrets, Aspen is forced to face everything she'd been trying to forget. And everything she'd forgotten she wanted. Aspen already knows the route from start to finish doesn't always go as planned. Now she needs to figure out how to get herself back on course for good.

Very enjoyable

Read this once before but first time listening. This author always writes entertaining stories with depth. From the few books I have read, it seems her stories tend to highlight certain real-life topics that she intertwines in an awesome romance that keeps you reading. Her characters are real and loveable. I love this narrator, her voice is just awesome and has definitely spoilt me for others. Admittedly, her Aussie accent needs A LOT of work...it was more Kiwi/Pommy at times and unrecognisable at others, but everything else about her reading makes up for this.

Engaging story ...... but that accent🤣

Looking for a little escapism I picked a random audiobook knowing nothing of the author or and the subject matter. My normal preference is crime fiction but being far too housebound for the past 6 months of COVID restrictions learning any more ways to kill may not be in the interest of my fellow housemates, hence the randomness of my pick. The Australian setting had me from the start and it felt genuine indicating the author had local knowledge. Further the writing style felt Australian despite US lead characters (there are discernible differences in national writing styles). Curious, I paused the story and googled Noyes which unsurprisingly revealed she is a fellow Queenslander. Being no expert on romance fiction I can only say the story line engaged from the start and kept my interest despite the usual predictable twists and turns in the plot. A major distraction was accent the narrator gave a minor Australian character. The closest I can describe is Africaan, straight off the plane from Jo’burg. So bad it jolted the listener out of the story, fortunately only a minor character.

Accents

Abby needs to work on her Australian accent. It was bit off putting as a Australian. I’m sure with practice she will get better. Other wise fantastic as always.

Good read but Abby ...

Good read but Abby, your Aussie accent ... um, needs a lot of work 🤷🏼‍♀️ You sounds more South Afrikaner with some improvement when you make Kiwi status.

Just Brilliant

A well written book that tells the story of a pro skier finding her groove in life again. Being a skier, I felt like I was right there in a lot of the scenes. The narration as always is on point. Do yourself a favour listen to this audiobook. Thanks EJ Noyes another brilliant book.

Great book - fabulous narration!

After a relatively short time in publishing lesfic, E.J. Noyes has quickly become a go-to favorite of mine. From the Ask, Tell series to Alone, to Turbulence, to this work, her subject matters vary widely - keeping things interesting - and her first person narrative pulls me deeply into her stories. Of all her books so far, I probably considered Gold my least favorite. Like in the way when you have a plate of your favorite delicious cheesecake options and you have to choose which one you are going to devour first. Then she releases this audiobook performed by Abby Craden and DAMN - it's SO GOOD - and you have to re-think that! Abby just has a way of elevating an already good story into a great one, or an excellent story into a fabulous one. What a talent! She makes me melt, swoon, cry, laugh and exclaim, "JEEEZUS!" during deliciously intimate love scenes and God knows E.J. excels at writing them! I think I'm going to have to start considering my feelings about E.J.'s books like I would my own children (if I had any - lol) where they're all my favorites for various reasons. My God - how can you choose?? If you could only get one format of this book, I would go with the audio. It's just fantastic!

This book does NOT disappoint

I have been binging on all the audiobooks I can find by Noyes and Craden and so far I have not found one book that is not close to spectacular. In my opinion, Noyes is one of the best authors in this genre and Abby just adds magic ;)

Excellent!!!!

When I read this book a year ago, I rated it 5*. I wish I had more stars to give the audiobook version. E. J. Noyes is an incredible writer, Abby Craden is an incredible narrator, and the combination of the two works perfectly every time. After an accident brought an end to her career as an Alpine skier, Aspen Archer became a ski instructor, losing herself in the sports she loves despite not being able to compete anymore. On holidays in Australia, Cate Tierney hires Aspen to give lessons to her daughter Gemma, then for herself. The attraction between the two women is instant. Cate is everything Aspen wants in a woman: smart, beautiful, kind, and a mother to a clever and sweet kid. Cate’s feelings are just as strong but she comes with baggage (who doesn’t?) and is wary of asking too much from Aspen, who is a few years younger than her. Pain, whether physical or mental, is a recurring theme is E. J. Noyes’ books, or, more specifically, the way her characters deal or do not deal with that pain. How they grow from it, with it, away from it. How they conquer it. In Gold, Aspen is living with physical pain from her accident and with anxiety and panic attacks that probably go back to way before that. Cate is recovering from an abusive relationship. Both are scared of themselves, of not being strong enough, and of not being able to be there for the other. What makes Noyes such a great writer (among other things) is her ability to always hint at hope, making the reader root passionately for her characters, feel optimistic even in the darkest times. E. J. Noyes is also one of those writers who completely stump me and my review-writing skills. Nothing I write will do her books justice. I have so much respect and love (yes, love) for her words that mine fade, as if they weren’t worthy of coming so close to the sun. So I’ll leave it at what I wrote in my first review: read (or listen to) this book. It’s good. It’ll make you feel good.

Beyond topnotch

One of EJ Noyes' best. So many emotions. The avalanche segment was outstanding. I had to stop for a minute and catch my breath because it is so real. Oh and the passion and sensuality....off the charts. Work of art. Ms. Crayden's talent is limitless.

You can't go wrong with an EJ Noyes Novel!

The Author, EJ Noyes writes most of her novels in first person, which is by far the BEST "writing faux pas" on the planet! This woman has serious writing talent! I have yet to listen to any of her audiobooks that I did not like. I've listened to everyone of them at least twice! I love her writing style and throw in Abby Craden.... Well hot Damn! My only complaint abut Ej Noyes is that she needs to write more novels and get them into audiobook format faster! lol

Gold star

Another triumphant collaboration of E. J. Noyes’ fabulous storytelling with Abby Craden’s genius narration. It’s not just the voice work that makes this so good, but the pauses, breathes and sighs combined to create the whole immersive experience. I am in total awe, as always, in the deftness of Abby Craden’s performance, which lifts E. J. Noyes’ work even higher in my estimation. There is one sequence towards the end that had me laughing out loud and is arguably my favourite piece of Abby narration ever! I will be re-listening to this for a long time.

Good character development

I know there are no murders etc which is usually how lesbian romances play out, but in this story, it is about the characters themselves, their development, and frustrations with their lives, and that was interesting.

Brilliant!

The story was great with Aspen being a ski instructor and has some issues due to injuries, and Cate who was badly hurt by a past relationship and is also a mum to Gemma. It was nice how their relationship developed throughout the book. The only thing I would have said I would have liked is Cate to have met Hayley, which is Aspens sister, as Aspen was meant to be close with her sister, and I think it would have made sense for Cate to have met Hayley as she was a major part of Aspens life. Really enjoyed Abby Craden’s narration as always. This is the second book of E.J.Noyes work that I have read and I was not disappointed, I really enjoyed it and will definitely be buying another book from this author.

A bit too long for me, but a good book over all!

A bit too long, could have ended about 3-4 chapters earlier for me. Also not a big fan of back-and-forth romances. I personally liked much better “Alone”. Abby Craden is a great narrator as always. Definitely a listen worth, but I won’t be listening to it again as I do with my favourites.
