Nun wird aus Bettinas Schwärmerei eine geradezu obsessive Verehrung, er jedoch antwortet ihr nur selten und äußerst knapp. Als seine eifersüchtige Ehefrau und Bettina vier Jahre später öffentlich aneinandergeraten, bricht Goethe den Kontakt endgültig ab. Bettina von Arnim veröffentlicht den überarbeiteten Briefwechsel 1835. Es wird eines der wichtigsten Werke der deutschen Romantik.
