Lady Gregory's translation of these old Irish stories was described by the poet W. B. Yeats as "the best book that has come out of Ireland in my time." It contains translations by Lady Gregory of medieval manuscript versions of myths and legends drawn from a pre-historic oral tradition that still survives today.
