About this listen
A Warhammer Age of Sigmar Novel
The Bad Moon looms over the city of Draconium, and Watch Captain Helena Morthan knows it bodes ill for the town. Can she and grieving warrior Hendrick Saul foil the plans of the Gloomspite Loonking, and save their people?
Listen because...
Andy Clark tells a twisted and disturbing tale of the grots of the Mortal Realms, delving into darkness in more ways than one. Strap in—this is going to be a wild ride....
The story:
In the dark corners of the Mortal Realms, the mad and mysterious Gloomspite Gitz go to war, following the trail of their abominable lunar deity. Nowhere is beyond the sight of the Bad Moon—not even those places under Sigmar’s protection, like the sweltering city of Draconium. Beneath the scalding rains of Aqshy, the city is a boiling pot of tension, its regent praying to Sigmar for guidance while Watch Captain Helena Morthan douses the fires of anarchy: blades drawn in the streets, heretical doomsayers preaching the end of days, and insects eating watchmen alive. When the grieving warrior Hendrick and his ragged warband arrive at the gates with a prophetic warning, Captain Morthan sees a way to save her people. But with the Bad Moon rising in the sky above and Skragrott the Loonking plotting in the depths below, will there even be a Draconium left for her to save?

A great insight into the Gitz told through an unexpected perspective
I really enjoyed this book; even if it was a bit short (for my liking), it gives a very visually descriptive depiction of the Gloomspite and how they fight and wage war while being told from the perspectives of a surprisingly likeable and well written group of characters so the author doesn’t have to write in annoying ‘Gitspeak’ for an overly lengthy portion of the book but while still fleshing them out well. The voice acting is also pretty good, with lots of characters quickly becoming distinguishable from voice alone. I’m not a huge Gitz fan and found myself enjoying this book a lot more than I was expecting to.

Long and drawn out
The book has great parts but I found that the story dragged and there wasn’t enough plot. The plot was to run around a city for chapters avoiding the glomspite gits.

A solid, light horror
While it takes a bit of time to get started, this story depicts the Gloomspite Gitz/Warhammer goblins as a delightfully fun cosmic horror. The overall plot won't wow you, but the fantastical descriptions and high-stakes action in the latter half kept me hooked.

Well fleshed out
The story shows why the gloomspite gits are scary and a terror in combat with a well written story with good characters (don’t get too attached) the only thing I dislike which could be deliberate is the questions you have at the end but you’ll need to listen if you wanna find out.

Gloomspite is a wonderful exercise in tension control
With a diverse and interesting cast of heroes, Gloomspite shows just how scary a rabble of goblins can be, as it walks us along in the perspective of the victims in one of the more engaging horror novels I've had the pleasure of enjoying out of the Black Library.
it controls its tension and pacing well, takes time to introduce and set up everything, gives every monster and hero a bit of time to shine without feeling too loosely put together.
expect body, insect and fungal horror with a healthy smattering of cosmic and old school slasher horror, a plot that serves the purpose and a range of characters you'd like to see on the tabletop.
the narration is also done very well, despite being a very suitable masculine voice it also conveys feminine characters in ways that match how I have heard similar people to those characters speak.
it was surprising and I can't think of a better fit for playing any of the cast. the range is impressive, gold star.
