Publisher's Summary

It takes more than a lie to hide the dark secrets of this picture-perfect family.

When the granddaughter of one of Florida’s most powerful judges disappears, it triggers a personal trauma for Detective Alice Garner: the kidnapping and murder of her own child. As a flood of painful memories comes rushing back, Alice sees herself in the guilt-ridden and emotionally fragile mother Charlotte Burke, who has become the target of a rush to judgment.

All too familiar with Charlotte’s situation, Alice is reluctant to cast any blame. Her gut instincts tell her that Charlotte’s anguish is rooted in something else - somewhere too dark for the truth to be seen. And Alice believes that it’s hiding behind the facade of the illustrious and guarded Burke mansion.

But uncovering Charlotte’s past comes with a risk. For Alice’s own life is becoming entangled in the secrets and lies of the picture-perfect family - an image that is about to be shattered in so many unexpected ways.

An all-nighter!

Couldn't put it down, yet hated for it to end! Lots of twists and turns!

I did like the twist

It wasn't bad, the story was surprising, but it was rather hard to get into it and the way it ends really don't satisfy the reader in my opinion.

The worst use of flashbacks I’ve ever encountered

I dislike flashbacks, but can tolerate one or two in a whole book. But this book had two or three flashbacks per chapter! And if that wasn’t bad enough the flashbacks times jumped around all over the place. One flashback would be prior to the abduction; the next might be three days after the abduction; the next would be seven days after the abduction; and the next might be five days after the abduction. Then there would be another flashback years prior to the abduction. Since they were not sequential, and the timing of the flashbacks were so unpredictable, it made the book hard to understand. The flashbacks were so frequent and so disjointed that they left my head swimming. Also, the author kept switching between characters, who were telling their own story. I was listening to this as an audiobook, so I frequently had to back up in a chapter to understand which character was speaking and what century we were in! This was the most annoying way of presenting material I have ever read. You ask why I kept listening? She did devise a good mystery, and I wanted to see who was the murderer and how the book ended. However, we don’t know how the story ends, because she left us hanging as to whether or not the protagonist was killed at the end! I have added this author to my list of do not read ever again.

Not just a sleeper

I have to say this was one of the worst books I’ve listened to, and I’ve listened to many over the last 4-5 years. The reader should not read another book out loud until she gets lessons. Her inflections/accent changed with the same person, and she would be harsh when the story read soft, etc. That being said, the story was slightly better than the reader’s interpretation. I won’t listen to another book read by this reader and probably not another book by this author.

Terrible. Goes off in all directions

No continuity. Probably one of the worst books Ive ever heard. Should have returned it kept hoping it would get better. No twists and turns just random scenarios. After struggling thru ending utterly stupid!!

I listened to this on audible and the story was amazing. The author paints such a descriptive picture..I could see it as described..it is a little wordy for my taste but great story.

Good Detective Story

It seemed so obvious throughout the majority of the book as to how it would end. Not so....it isn't what you'd expect. Good writing with a lot to cover before it comes to a 1/2 hour ending. I did not care too much for the narrator because it seemed to pleasant for the mood of the story, but then again, it was not my type of story.
