In the high mountains of Tibet, rumors are spreading. People whisper of an outbreak, of thousands of dead, of bodies pushed into mass graves. It is some strange new disease...a disease, they say, that can kill in minutes. The Chinese government says the rumors aren't true, but no one is allowed in or out of Tibet. At the Pentagon, admiral James Curtiss learns that satellite images prove that a massive genocide is underway. This is no disease. It's a weapons test. Chinese scientists have developed a way to kill based on a person's genetic traits.

Publisher's Summary
Berlin. 1961. Two months after the Wall. And the Cold War is threatening to boil over.
It is an especially uneasy time at The Cabin, a joint US-West German listening station. Its agents failed to see the Wall coming. And now the East Germans and their Soviet allies are making new, aggressive moves.
Then, CIA cryptographer Wallace Reed decodes the latest message from the double agent known as Longshore - and the crisis escalates. Has Longshore been caught? Suborned? Murdered? Or, the worst possibility of all - is he trying to send a secret code to a mole in Reed’s own office, sabotaging their intelligence and sending reports back to the other side?
Ghost Station is a tense thriller about espionage, cryptography, and paranoia, set in the earliest days of the Berlin Wall. Can Reed trust Longshore? His boss? His lover? Can he find the truth behind the lies - or will Berlin become ground zero for a world-ending war?

Ghost Station pulls you in from the beginning
I've only started it but so far I'm enjoying the book. From the start, it leads us into a series of mysteries and creates suspense. If you like espionage you'll like this. Dan as usual creates unique characters that you connect with.
Jonathan Davis does a great job creating unique voices that are memorable and I like the tone he takes. The style of the story makes you feel like you're listening in over their shoulders.
I'll update as I finish. So far, I say get it and give it a try.
Ok, I'm back. Ghost Station doesn't disappoint. From beginning to end you're taken through the ever guessing world of spies and lies. Cryptography does take the driver seat but it's not so much that it's hard to follow. I'm not a cryptologist but it felt authentic and genuine into giving us an inside view into the mind of one.
It keeps you guessing the whole way through and you may think you've got it figured out to only be shown that you were wrong. The ending will not disappoint. I still say get it if you even remotely like spy stories. This is a great action thriller spy novel that is worthy to be in your library. Get it!

An excellent thriller with no supernatural element
I've enjoyed the science fiction and fantasy elements in Dan Wells' books in the past, so I wasn't sure what to expect for his first with no supernatural or futuristic elements. He did not disappoint! Ghost Station is a story set in the earliest days of the Berlin Wall, and is just as tense and exciting as any of Wells' other books, if not more so. The detail to period technology and ciphers made the story very interesting, and the characters come through to make you very concerned for their welfare. In all, an excellent story!

A Must for Jonathan Davis Fans & Math Game Lovers
I purchased on members only sale as I love narrator Jonathan Davis, my fave Sandra Brown Mean Streak, do not miss it.
The publishers summery is spot on so no need to add to it. However, Mr Davis shows off his talents in this novel as it starts out a bit slow for me, but due to his wonderful talent to make our hero come to life, I am right there at the Berlin Wall just built. I have had the opportunity to visit Check Point Charlie in Berlin, and Mr Davis telling of this story is wonderful if you love the old story of The Spy Who Came in from the Cold, or the recent film with Tom Hanks, Bridge of Spies. If you are a lover of numbers word puzzles, then this book is for you as the author goes into detail how many can be done in the first chapters of the book. I am not a numbers person but it was enlightening to hear how people who do see in numbers can do code making or breaking.
I do use the new 1.25x speed to match the mystery. Give it a try.

So well done, it seems like it could true.
Dan Wells does a great job with this novel. It is not the ridiculous action and gadget novel of a Jason Bourne or James Bond. Rather, it's the story of how real spy work is done.
Wells does a great job of explaining the cryptography without overwhelming the reader with the math. Not being a big fan of math myself, I still found it very interesting to hear how it all worked.
The characters are so real and Wells fills them with life. You can empathize with their struggles and hopes.
A great book, it made me actually look forward to my commute for a few days. Thanks for that Dan!

Delightfully paranoid
I listened to this over a roadtrip and I found myself taking unnecessary side trips just so I could spend more time in the car listening. I was riveted. The paranoia is perfect--at times you think anyone and everyone could be the bad guy--and you're trying to solve the clues along with the cryptographer.
Also, the level of research that must have gone into this book is mindblowing, from the history to the cryptography.

Ghost Station
Germany, Berlin 1961 to be exact. The wall is there and it just closed. But we are going to follow one CIA cryptographer, Wally Reed. Reed is the one decoding the messages from a operative called Longshore, but when a message is missed its up to Reeds office to find out where and what it is. When Reed and his girlfriend (who works in his office) figure out where the message is they go to get it, across the closed wall. Once they get the message they end up separated with Reed on the run on the wrong side of the wall.
This book is filled with espionage, spies, and lots of codes. The book is action packed and has so much suspense it will have you on the edge of your seat. The narrator Jonathan Davis brings this story to life and puts you right in the middle, next to Reed. This is a wonderful book that brings that time period to the forefront and lets you see it through the eyes of people that where there when it happened what they were able to do about it.

A Perfect Cold War Thriller
I grew up during the Cold War, and spy stories in that setting were too real, too scary to be enjoyable at the time. Perhaps because it benefits from distance, and declassification of secrets, GHOST STATION is more enjoyable AND more realistic than the spy thrillers I read back in the 80's.
Dan Wells wrote a great book, but Jonathan Davis's narration takes it to another level entirely. His is the best single-narrator performance I've ever listened to. It's so good I can't imagine trying to read the book without his help.

Fantastic book
Ghost Station is one of the best spy novels I’ve read, and I’ve read more than my share (Le Carre, Ludlum, etc.).The characters and story feel utterly real and plausible. There are no Bonds or Bournes here, just a well-developed Everyman protagonist with real weaknesses, mistakes, and reactions. The plot is excellent, the setting authentic, but it’s the depth and emotion infused into the characters that resonate most. The antagonists are not cardboard cutouts either, as you’ll find with the devastatingly sympathetic motive of an antagonist revealed at the end.
Dan Wells has written a fantastic book here, and the narrator does a good job too. It’s well worth the read/listen, and I hope it gets a printed book edition, because it deserves a larger audience.

Evocative, atmospheric and intelligent thriller.
The opening sequence and subsequent references to Berlin as the wall goes up amongst the mixed communities and intelligence agencies in 1961 is thrilling. The codes and complicated world of encryption must be a joy to game and puzzle geeks. Occasionally the layers of codes become a little overwhelming but the characters redeem the balance of the storytelling.A stimulating and fascinating book. Where do I get a hard copy?

Gripping story that keeps you hooked to the end
I loved this story. Dan Wells creates a very plausible atmosphere as backdrop to the story. The intense paranoia - everyone suspects everyone. I also loved learning more about encryption and codes. The reader is terrific, reading clearly and altering his voice to represent the different characters. The plot never flags, developing and building up to a thrilling climax. I'll be looking out for more books by this author.
