I 1934 bryder der en voldsom borgerkrig ud i Tyrol i Østrig. Krigen varer ikke længe, men den kræver alligevel mange ofre. I "Galgefolket" følger vi en gruppe børn, der forsøger at skjule sig fra de voldsomme handlinger. I en tid lykkes det dem at klare sig sammen i en forladt landsby, men som tiden går, begynder det at gå helt galt imellem dem. Splittelsen mellem dem vokser ligesom i det samfund, de er flygtet fra, og truer med at få katastrofale følger.
Torben Weinreich (f. 1946) er en dansk forfatter og lærer. Han har skrevet en lang række børne- og ungdomsbøger og var mellem 1998 og 2004 leder af Center for Børnelitteratur Danmarks Pædagogiske Universitet i København.
