About this listen

For 1000 years, the people of Alera have united against the aggressive races that inhabit the world, using their unique bond with the furies - elementals of earth, air, fire, water and metal. But now, Gaius Sextus, First Lord of Alera, grows old and lacks an heir. Ambitious Lords manoeuvre to place their Houses in positions of power, and a war of succession looms on the horizon.

Far from city politics in the Calderon Valley, young Tavi struggles with his lack of fury crafting. At 15, he has no wind fury to help him fly, no fire fury to light his lamps. Yet as the Alerans' most savage enemy - the Marat - return to the Valley, his world will change.

Caught in a storm of deadly wind furies, Tavi saves the life of a runaway slave. But Amara is actually a spy, seeking intelligence on possible Marat traitors to the Crown. And when the Valley erupts into chaos - when rebels war with loyalists and furies clash with furies - Amara will find Tavi invaluable. His talents will outweigh any fury-born power - and could even turn the tides of war.

Put my nose in this 8 years ago. was good to hear it this time. The struggles of a boy that is abnormal in a world where having crafting is the norm. His victories and defeats, how he overcomes his own mind

Great story with multiple threads and I was never hanging out or bored for one characters story line more than the other. All fantastic and the way they came together. Absolute perfection!

Love it!

Story is great. Love it.
Editing did skip a few times. Not enough to ruin the story.

Love this book

Being a huge fan of The Dresden files I was not sure if I would enjoy this as much but to my delight I found it to be excellent. Kate Reading is brilliant!

Another great book from Jim Butcher

Good story and well narrated. Editing seems to skip a little, though doesn't take away from the performance.

Binge worthy!

Well that was fun! I think I got through it in record time. Didn't want to put it down. Good yarn in a new world.

What a treat to find new Jim Butcher books

Very enjoyable fantasy story with plenty of dry humor mixed in, plus excellent banter between characters. Only issue is the file skipped periodically, could be my device or the app needs and update. But overall excellent and enjoyable.

Hearty hearing

It’s a good story but there was something off about it. I realized what it was halfway through: it’s a coming of age story and seems to be quite “youth orientated” but then there are some very suggestive and almost blatant sexual scenes that are totally inappropriate for this kind of audience and the “coming of age” style. Some of the violent scenes seem to be out of kilter as well. Who is the audience?

As for Kate Readings reading- once again she proves her amazing skill!

The production is a bit sketchy though. Some of the sections would almost skip along too fast. Bad editing.

Who is Jim writing this for?
