Publisher's Summary
For 1000 years, the people of Alera have united against the aggressive races that inhabit the world, using their unique bond with the furies - elementals of earth, air, fire, water and metal. But now, Gaius Sextus, First Lord of Alera, grows old and lacks an heir. Ambitious Lords manoeuvre to place their Houses in positions of power, and a war of succession looms on the horizon.
Far from city politics in the Calderon Valley, young Tavi struggles with his lack of fury crafting. At 15, he has no wind fury to help him fly, no fire fury to light his lamps. Yet as the Alerans' most savage enemy - the Marat - return to the Valley, his world will change.
Caught in a storm of deadly wind furies, Tavi saves the life of a runaway slave. But Amara is actually a spy, seeking intelligence on possible Marat traitors to the Crown. And when the Valley erupts into chaos - when rebels war with loyalists and furies clash with furies - Amara will find Tavi invaluable. His talents will outweigh any fury-born power - and could even turn the tides of war.

Not bad.
I have been holding off on reading these. I love Dresden Files but I see the shortcomings of the author. Calderon has the same shortcomings (repeated descriptions, too many adjectives, infuriating character motivations) but without the wonderful Harry Dresden.
That being said, it was a fun read. I am interested in seeing where it goes next.
But: The rape scene was insanely unnecessary. Butcher doesn’t write well enough to pull it off and it didn’t have any meaning to the story overall.
And: the audio editing was dismal! So many bad cuts taking me out of the story.

Who is Jim writing this for?
It’s a good story but there was something off about it. I realized what it was halfway through: it’s a coming of age story and seems to be quite “youth orientated” but then there are some very suggestive and almost blatant sexual scenes that are totally inappropriate for this kind of audience and the “coming of age” style. Some of the violent scenes seem to be out of kilter as well. Who is the audience?
As for Kate Readings reading- once again she proves her amazing skill!
The production is a bit sketchy though. Some of the sections would almost skip along too fast. Bad editing.

Good story, decent narrator, horrible production
I liked the story, nothing that's going to surprise anyone but I found it entertaining and the pace was good, the narrator did a decent job but some of the male voices was off, I question why they choose a female narrator. The production and editing was absolutely horrible, sentences cut midway, disrupted the immersion.

Badly edited / produced
This is another great story from Jim Butcher and, as always, a great performance from Kate Reading. Sadly all their hard work is ruined by bad editing and production.
The story pulls you in and you feel immersed into a detail narrative and spellbound by Kate's every word. Then you're yanked out by a sudden change of tone mid-sentence, where two sentences were spliced together punctuation be damned, or find a sentence has been cut too soon leaving dead air that makes you think the app stopped.
In any case, your enjoyment is constantly interrupted by bad editing.
I really hope they produce another version of this audio book, it is a shame to let Kate's performance go to waste.
I'm hoping the other books in this series have better quality control.

What a surprise!
At first I thought this novel would be the usual sword and sorcery story. Fun and exciting but nothing out of the ordinary. Well, what a wonderful surprise! Although based on the Roman civilization, especially its military structure, Jim Butcher put a refreshing twist to the barbarian hordes and the weak Garrison compound, unprepared to effectively defend the realm. Then there was the "magic", almost de reguer for a fantasy novel. I really enjoyed the use of elemental spirits and the strong bond between them and their human companions. A great touch was giving the elementals names.
The characters, both protagonists and antagonists were well crafted and so realistic that I could empathize (or hate) them with enthusiasm.
I could write an essay but I think prospective readers would die of boredom. so, this is my advice. Buy, read, keep and read again. Fun and thought provoking, rolled into one. By the way, the denouement is perfect.

Great book, decent narrator, sub-par production
This review will focus more on the technical side of things rather than the story as that is top notch in my opinion.
As some other reviews that I read prior to getting this audiobook point out, the edits in this (and at least the following book) are a bit poorly done. There are noticeable skips where it's clear that they have made a cut in the audio-track with words stopping suddenly or beginning suddenly. Personally this didn't bother me that much (it isn't all the time, just often enough to be noticeable), but it needs to be mentioned. I personally would probably have preferred a male narrator I think, but Kate does a decent job with different voices (though quite a few gravelly gruff male voices sounded a bit the same). I'm guessing she's at least partially to blame for the amount of edits, but ultimately I blame the production team. If you (like me) come from listening to Jim's other series The Dresden Files you will really notice the difference and possibly be more annoyed by how comparatively poorly done this is.
For the reasons above I'm deducting one star overall and 2 stars from the performance.

I strongly advise getting this book
What other book might you compare Furies of Calderon to, and why?
This had elements of Game of Thrones, Wheel of Time, Stormlight Archive and a few other genre leading titles but with Butcher's unique twist.
It combines political manoeuvrings with magic, monsters and adventure.
Which scene did you most enjoy?
I quite enjoyed the wax forest...
If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
I refuse to answer this question as the word 'be' is used too many times.
Any additional comments?
This is a wonderful story about a Romanesque kingdom, it's subjects and their powers. To be honest the start of the book was a little frustrating as it jumps straight in using specific language and terms which mean nothing to the reader until further on in the story but after a little while this doesn't matter. All you really need to know is that everybody has the ability to manipulate one or more of the six furys which are entities residing in the elements.
I am reading the third book now and much like The Wheel of Time, the characters are already starting to feel like old friends.
For those Dresden fans this book is certainly worth reading but don't expect any similarities with the Dresden Files, apart from the very occasional dollops of sarcasm that is.
All in all I can't recommend this book enough. To fans of epic fantasy it's a must.

Badly edited - Bits of audiobook missing
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
Improve the editing.
Occasionally Kate's sentences have been edited so they run into each other (absolutely no gap between them). Occasionally whole sentences (or in one case an entire page) appear to have been dropped
Which character – as performed by Kate Reading – was your favourite?
Kate's presentation of Doroga is brilliant
What character would you cut from Furies of Calderon?
All the characters are pretty integral to the plot, so it would be hard to cut a character. I used to think Aric was a throw away character, but cutting him from the first book would impact heavily on the second (Academ's Fury).
If a character really had to be dropped perhaps Steadholder Warner and his sons could be dropped?
Any additional comments?
Fix the audio recording. Its a great book. It deserves a great recording.

Great listen
I often judge a book by how quickly I rush off to download the next in the series. On that scale, this one is a 5/5. (Book #2 was downloaded within an hour of finishing #1).
I've enjoyed Jim Butcher's Dresden and Cinder Spires books - this is nothing like either of those. Think Wheel of Time meets Stormlight (perhaps due to the narrator being Kate Reading?) It's a new world with a well crafted magic system - epic fantasy. Loved it!
Lots of decent characters, nothing too predictable (even if it does have all the usual ingredients), and it moves along at a cracking pace.
The editing is not perfect - some sentences feel spliced together - but it didn't create any gaping holes in the plot and it didn't detract from the story too much.
What's also great is that there appear to be multiple books in the series. I'm already happily halfway into book #2, and the pace hasn't let up yet....

Read this book years ago amazing what you miss
I love the Dresden books and when these books became available I bought the series and read them. They are so different and yet so well written.
When listening to the above book (it is a few years after I read the series) it is amazing what you miss. Compared with Jim Butcher's last book The Aeronauts Windlass (which I hated), the characters are believable and you feel an attachment to them even the villains.
In respect of the narrator I found two small problems in a couple places she seem to mix up the voices of the characters. Plus a couple of places the recording was jerky (bad recording).
But she has a pleasant voice that I virtually finished the book over two days .
Cannot wait for book two.

Good performance, good book
Kate reading was as good as ever, well read with clear character voices.
Jim Butcher seems as though he wants to write a very looooooong series of these books. Don't get me wrong. It's a good book with a decent story line and engaging characters who you can care about, that's why I gave it four stars. However, Without spoiling the plot, you could probably read book 2 of the series (and I do hope he does a book 2) first without missing too many major developments.
Would definitely recommend this book to fans of both Jim butcher and Kate Reading
