Statt zu studieren, war er plötzlich Soldat. Nach dem Krieg war es für Böll eine Frage der Moral, Krieg und Nachkriegszeit so zu beschreiben, wie sie wirklich waren. Gerade in der kurzen Form fand Böll die Möglichkeit sich auszudrücken. Seine eindringliche Sprache und seine beißende Gesellschaftskritik machten ihn schnell bekannt.
