Publisher's Summary

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • A thrilling and emotionally powerful novel from the author of the Jane Hawk series

“A literary miracle . . . a tapestry of intrigue and suspense.”—The Boston Globe

His birth was marked by wonder and tragedy. He sees beauty and terror beyond our deepest dreams. His story will change the way you see the world.

Bartholomew Lampion is born on a day of tragedy and terror that will mark his family forever. All agree that his unusual eyes are the most beautiful they have ever seen. On this same day, a thousand miles away, a ruthless man learns that he has a mortal enemy named Bartholomew. He embarks on a relentless search to find this enemy, a search that will consume his life. And a girl is born from a brutal rape, her destiny mysteriously linked to Barty and the man who stalks him.

At the age of three, Barty Lampion is blinded when surgeons remove his eyes to save him from a fast-spreading cancer. As he copes with his blindness and proves to be a prodigy, his mother counsels him that all things happen for a reason and that every person’s life has an effect on every other person’s, in often unknowable ways.

At thirteen, Bartholomew regains his sight. How he regains it, why he regains it, and what happens as his amazing life unfolds and entwines with others results in a breathtaking journey of courage, heart-stopping suspense, and high adventure.

Very long winded. Nice ending.

The story itself is a good idea, but the delivery, oh so repetitive. Constant repetitive references to things as if Zoontz thinks we'll forget what we're reading from one page to the next. A tiring read/listen.

Colourful and Theological

A Superb writer with brilliant turns of phrase. A shocking and entertaining story, with characters so well presented. Excellent theological comments. The end was odd, but acceptable.
It just seemed to lack something.

female character portrayal

i fail to understand why male narrators always make the female characters sound like dullards with wimpy stupid voices

Hopeful horror

Dean Koontz always manages to weave hope through his dark and grotesque stories. This one is probably the most hopeful of his that I have read. There is the usual horror villain, very twisted and entirely one-dimensionally evil, as you’d expect in this genre. His manner of dispatch is startling and surprisingly low-key. I almost wanted a postscript to read about his subsequent suffering. But I think the message of the book was to move forward from the horrors and seek the light, so finishing on a vindictive look into the punishing life of the villain would undermine that message. I’m amazed that after all these years, Koontz is still able to come up with original plots and appealing new characters. Some of the the peripheral characters, like the monk turned homicide detective, I would love to meet again in other novels. Some good, strong, well written women in this story too.

The narrator was OK but he is a little ponderous and he does not do the voices of children well.

WOW

Unlike Mr Koontz I am not great with words but I will try. Dean Koontz is the most remarkable storyteller I’ve so far come across. His descriptions etc are absolutely amazing. This book had me tears, joy and fear for all the characters. Please read this book because if you don’t you will be missing out on not only excellent story telling but also feeling of sharing the lives of these fictional characters that become so real to you as you read. Praise and awe to you Mr Koontz and for the narrator.

Surprising!

An amazing book that took me on a roller coaster of emotions. From shock, horror, surprise, disgust, sadness, laughter, hope, love and family. I was taken on a journey through many different lives that were all entwined and threatened by a mad man.

Surprisingly deep and spiritual

What an enlightening and emotional book, something I wasn’t expecting to be honest! The narration is next level amazing and worthy of a distinction itself. This book is quite different, yet not at the same time, to other Dean Koontz’s books. I feel…improved for having read it. Like I’ve had some sort of inclination explained and accepted. It’s a good book.

From the very beginning it was engrossing.
Even if you aren't a fan of Dean Koontz, this book is one you should consider. So much emotion and great characters. I loved it, I actually didn't want it to end.

Fantastic reality - a joy despite its darkness!

The blurb for this book suggests an interesting yarn with a miraculous scientific twist; but you actually get is above and beyond! It has everything - tripping through every imaginable trope and leaving the reader smiling at the elegance with which its many threads are intertwined. Its fantastic elements feel real and I was left with a wonderous feeling of hope. Brilliant narration too!

I want more!
